No "marked similarity" to Blazing Saddles[edit]

Somebody added the following statement to the article (I removed it)---

"The IMDb movie database notes the marked similarity between this movie and the later Mel Brooks Western spoof Blazing Saddles (1974)."

Nope. The text of the review at IMDB reads, "the film’s style is pretty close to that of BLAZING SADDLES (1974) – but it actually anticipates Mel Brooks by almost a decade!"

IMDB is widely considered by Wikipedians to be an unreliable source, particularly when it comes to user reviews there. None of it is peer-reviewed. The "marked similarity" statement is a distortion, an untruth.

In Blazing Saddles a new sheriff is sent to the town to protect it from bad guys who are there to make the place unlivable so that the railroad can go through.

In Carry on Cowboy a new sheriff is sent to a town that has been taken over by lawless ruffians due to the influence of the Rumpo Kid, and that's the full extent of the plot. No railway is involved.

The amateur reviewer at IMDB wrote, ". . .the film’s style is pretty close to that of BLAZING SADDLES. . ."

Actually it is not close at all, not in style, not in direction of drama, style of comedy, visuals, nor set design. Perhaps he was thinking of similarities of plot. The similarities of plot between the two films can be easily attributed to the widespread Western genre convention of a lawless town being cleaned up by a new sheriff. Like, that's in dozens of Westerns. It's common.

The idea that Carry on Cowboy ". . .it actually anticipates Mel Brooks by almost a decade!" is disproved by the existence of dozens of Western comedy films made before Blazing Saddles. As you'd expect, WP has a comprehensive list of western comedy films---http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Western_(genre)_comedy_films

Oh look at that --- 128 western comedies, the bulk of them made before Carry on Cowboy and Blazing Saddles. 124.181.144.113 (talk) 01:20, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
