Sorry about all the edits, it is and should be 1971. BTW, 217.60.78.46 is a vandal. 24.115.241.23 10:43, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

The four founder members are/were in fact Michael Hardman, Graham Lees, Jim Makin and Bill Mellor (source: What's Brewing September 1974). What's Brewing is, of course, the monthly newsletter of Camra.

The first AGM took place in Nuneaton in 1972, the next in London in 1973, with York in 1974.

Diiscussion

One of my friends is an "authority" on real ale. I'll mail him and see if he can help us out with this one (between visits to the pub :-) ) sjc

No need - just visit the page on Real Ale here on Wikipedia.

The site lists different things the group is about. I'm still not sure what they mean by "real ale"--as compared to what?

As compared to beer which is filtered and pasteurised to remove every last vestige of yeast and life, and is thus dead beer. The brewers then seem to think it is OK to attempt to revive it by injecting excessive doses of CO2 (keg beer and lager), or mixed gases ("smoothflow"). When I'm dead, no matter how much air they inject into me, it isn't going to stop me starting to smell and taste a bit off. So it is with beer.

The major distinction is between how the beer is stored and served. The major breweries have a vested interest in promoting "keg" beer which is pressurised whereas CAMRA are advocates for "cask" beer which is the traditional unpressurised method of dispensation. There is a world of difference in the taste - cask is much more pleasant. sjc

So they're not about also brewing "real" ale from malted barley (vs. other grains?)

Well part of it is preserving traditional forms of beer. They definitely support Budvar over Budweiser partly because the latter uses rice, but mainly because Budvar tastes better and has just as much (in some people's eyes a better) claim on the name Budweiser.

Loads of info (from the horse's mouth, so to speak) on http://www.camra.org.uk/SHWebClass.ASP?WCI=ShowDoc&DocID=2243

Anyone want to contribute?

I've been looking down the pages of encyclopedia topics requested and a fair number are 'famous ales' without pages - would anyone with relevant knowledge like to have a look at writing any of these? --Sachabrunel 18:37, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
