City of ghosts[edit]

This page http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/August2005/05/c7500.html says that Toyota employs 4,000 people? Not a big difference between 3,500, but I wonder if 4,000 is more accurate. I heard the plant expanded some time ago... dave 16:19, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm writing here to debate the towns nickname currently stated as "city of ghosts" on the citys wiki. I find that being a long time resident of Cambridge and its three down town cores that i can accuratelly portray this city. I recently on the eight of april, removed the City of ghosts reference and included a more accurate depiction of what the towns real nickname could be, which is such a silly thing in the first place. Someone then labeled my updates as "scum" and "unfounded", While i can say the exact same about the latter. As a long standing resident of cambridge ive been deeply involved with the community in many angles for quite some time. So i find it quite absurd to even give the town a quasi-offical nickname. That being said, i feel the reasons other users of the wiki may feel that City of ghosts is more appropiate than Crackbridge as a nickname to maintain the fruitful false-reality people seem to enjoy enveloping themselves in. Wikipedia is to provide unbiased fact instead of personal fullfilment that some people seem to be set on. I hope you folks can reconsider such a obvious mistake of judgement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.93.39.18 (talkcontribs)

The whole ‘City of Ghosts’ thing seems dodgy enough to me as it is, but your ‘nickname’ is merely silly — can you provide references to support your view of the town? David Arthur 23:05, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is it possible that the City of Ghosts comment was may have mistakenly been intended for Cambridge, UK? I know that there are books written on that topic. The only on line reference I could find regarding Cambridge as the 'City of Ghosts' was from a restaurant listing site - hardly a credible source. That being said, I hardly feel that 'crackbridge' is fair or accurate description of the city either. Might I suggest removing any text referring to either of these 'nicknames' until a more credible source can be found? --Ithinkhelikesit 22:32, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How about the ghost thing starting from Galt Collegiate institute - Home of the ghosts?DannyMount (talk) 16:17, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was watching Jeopardy, and the question was "This city has the highest number of coffee shops per capita in all of Canada", The answer was "Cambridge, Ontario" of course. I have been there, and there are a LOT of coffee shops, but I haven't been able to find any documented proof of this claim. Anyone else have any ideas? --Dave S 21:26, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've lived in Cambridge for 15 years and I know for sure it is the town with the most Tim Horton's coffee shops across Canada. I know of 14 locations within preston and Galt. That is not including Hespler. These three parts of town make up Cambridge. I was searching to see if there were any cemeteries that existed at any point in time around Blair Road (where I live). This is because I think my house is haunted. And then when I heard other people commenting on the "City of ghost" nickname, I started to get scared. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.140.156.169 (talkcontribs)

I have heard the same claim attributed to Burlington and Hamilton, so there would have to be some evidence provided. In any case we can only be talking about numbers of Tim Hortons per capita because if we talk about overall numbers than Toronto will win for sure simply because it's bigger.
I looked for official evidence for this. I found this CBC clip from 1993, describing Moncton, NB as having the highest number of Tim Hortons per capita. The "Did you know?" tab however has updated information on the stat for 2008:
Moncton continues to have a high proportion of Tim Hortons locations. But in 2008, when asked about the highest per-capita number of Tim's locations, the corporation's official answer is "Atlantic Canada". "We say 'Atlantic Canada' as that stat moves around," explained Rachel Douglas, director of public affairs for Tim Hortons, in an e-mail to CBC Digital Archives.
So whoever holds the title now, it's somewhere out East, and nowhere in Ontario. --Saforrest (talk) 17:27, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

I just updated the info box to meet the Canadian City Standard box. If anyone has access to a copy of the City's flag, that would be helpful. I am also having difficulty tracking down the City's motto, so its a "?" until I can. --Ithinkhelikesit 20:57, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Intro[edit]

It seems like this article needs better organisation. I'm not saying to complain, I'd like to try to do it, but I'm not sure where to start. The first para or so is a fine opener, but the last several in the opener seem disjointed - more like trivia, with no connecting narrative. The first real section (with a title) should be a history or overview section, don't you think? Any thoughts? --Yahoo!Sirius 09:16, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Cambridge, Ontario Coat of Arms.jpg[edit]

Image:Cambridge, Ontario Coat of Arms.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 19:31, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Entertainment[edit]

I removed the part re: The "Wrestling" League. Wikipedia isn't a soapbox to be used for advertising non-notworthy events ie. that wrestling league. The Cambridge page doesn't need to include every single event that takes place: my yard sale, or my neighbor's BBQ party.

Newfoundland[edit]

From the article: "Many Newfoundlanders (mostly from the Conception Bay and Bell Island area) have migrated to Cambridge, mostly due to global warming."

I assume this is vandalism... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.153.145.208 (talk) 18:13, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism/Copyright Violation[edit]

Most of the entire History section appears to be copy/pasted or lifted nearly verbatim from http://www.cambridge.ca/city_clerk/city_archives/historical_information_evolution_of_cambridge (which is copyright the City of Cambridge. I'm not sure where I can see who added that section, so I'm not sure who to contact. mtffm (talk) 19:18, 5 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Park Hill Road Bridge[edit]

The article currently says, "Also in Cambridge is the Park Hill Road Bridge (2002), formally known as the Queen Street Bridge (1933)." This doesn't seem to make sense - should "formally" be changed to "formerly"? PKT(alk) 12:34, 1 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

History of Galt[edit]

Galt, Ontario redirects to Cambridge, Ontario; but in this article, history starts with the amalgamation. The smaller components of Hespeler and Preston have their own articles describing their separate histories, but Wikipedia apparently has nothing on the pre-amalgamation history of Galt. It could be added to this article or a fourth separate article could be created for it. --76.69.137.194 (talk) 06:42, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Demographics[edit]

The last paragraph in this section should be rewritten and referenced by someone knowledgeable, to make more clear the meaning of what is being said. Cunningpal (talk) 23:40, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this Cunningpal - I took the whole thing out. PKT(alk)

Condensed, moved a lot of content to the new article, Galt, Ontario[edit]

See the Talk page for the new Galt article. It explains the situation.

Here is a copy:

New Article, much of it from Cambridge, Ontario

As discussed with @Hwy43 and on the Talk page for Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Canadian communities (Need help, Creating new article, Galt, Ontario redirect problem), the other two communities of Cambridge had their own pages but Galt did not. It does now.
I still need to do some editing on it, and create new content for Economy, etc. However, most other aspects are fully covered - for the entire huge city of Cambridge, Ontario - in that primary article.
I will condense the Cambridge article since only a bit of Galt History is needed there, considering the long section in this Galt article. Collaborative edits to expand and improve this article would be appreciated.

Galt hospital[edit]

I had included the correct title of the Flash from the past article, but the wrong URL.

The first hospital in Waterloo County opened in 1890 as Galt General Hospital. Additional buildings and facilities were added in the early 1900s. By 1918, the facility had an X-ray room, a 27 room nurses' residence and was also a nurse training school.[15]

I have fixed the citation. https://www.therecord.com/living-story/9042867-flash-from-the-past-hospitals-history-of-growth-a-cambridge-galt-constant/

Indigenous Land Back Settlement[edit]

Land was wrongfully taken from indigenous peoples. The land 6 miles on either side of the Grand River was not given back to Six Nations of the Grand, this includes Cambridge, Ontario. There is currently a multimillion dollar law suite going on with over 30,000 pieces of evidence to prove this. MarieSpeedie (talk) 21:43, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
