Nest building[edit]

I've found slightly conflicting information about nest building duties by the sexes in the Petersen guides vs the Audubon books. Any correction or clarification is welcome. DDugan 03:32, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On Feb. 27, 2007 I observed a group of California Scrub Jays goading on a pair of jays whose sex I could not determine in what only could be described as a tussle. They were on a hill. Rolling on eachother for a period of at least 10 minutes. They could have been mating or fighting, it was unclear. They rolled over each other, through a fence, down a stone wall of 4 ft, and across a lawn, making so much noise that I had to inhibit them. Is there someone out there who has observed similar behavior?

Behavior[edit]

I have a pair of these birds living near my house, and they are quite aggressive with other birds, especially Steller's Jays, and also very bold when it comes to humans. After only three days of intermittent feeding of peanuts (in the shell), I got both of them to repeatedly fly up and take a peanut out of my open hand, and today one of them landed on my shoulder to get a peanut I had tucked into a fold in my jacket.
They are also plucky thieves: They think nothing about coming in my open garage door and helping themselves to the peanuts strewn along my workbench. All in all they are pretty fascinating birds. Farnsworth1968 08:35, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

incredibly annoying[edit]

I live in california's central valley and it's very quiet, all accept for this damn scrub jay blasting its profane AAAARRRRYYEEEEE AAAARRRRYYYEEEEE CHEYECK CHEYEK CHEYECK CHEYECK CHEYECK call from 5:30AM to 11:30AM, louder than a world war II air raid siren. I've resorted to purchasing several high-powered airsoft and metal pellet rifles (400FPS-1000FPS-6MM-.22 Rounds) in the hopes of pelting them back to their origin in hell.
