This article needs a lot of work. It is unlikely to derive from Hecate. Second, the alternate spellings are quite recent (and mainly American), due to the immense popularity in the US in the 90's. Pronunciation[edit]

Would be good to mention the pronunciation of Caitlin can vary from the more American "Kate linn" to the more Irish "Kathleen" the latter being the correct pronunciation of Caítlín, the Irish accents indicating longer vowel sounds. -- Horkana 23:51, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen it spelt 'Caitlín' in some places. Which is correct? There might be a good argument for some disambiguation if someone's primary stage name is Caitlyn though. Caitlín would be the correct Irish language original but this being the English language wikipedia we should retain Caitlin and also explain or otherwise include the Irish Caitlín (most computer users are unlikely to type the accents). -- Horkana (talk) 12:43, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation, again[edit]

I don't speak Irish myself so I'm not going to edit the page, but it could really use some IPA. "Natural orthography" pronunciation guides shouldn't be between phonemic slashes. And is it really pronounced "koyt-hleen"? Irish orthography gives /a/ as the value of "ai", and Irish phonology doesn't even mention /oi/ as existing in the language. I've removed the pronunciation information that was in the article, as it was highly misleading but couldn't easily be fixed due to the misleading information being coded into the templates used. The pronunciation "katelyn" is, as far as I know, largely confined to the US. The original pronunciation of Caitlin is the one more similar to "katleen", and is by far the predominant pronunciation in Ireland, where the name originates. Both pronunciations are used in the English language, so to refer to one as English and the other as Irish is misleading, especially as neither is particularly associated with England - one is associated with Ireland and the other with the US. Also, the one which wasn't mentioned in the body of the article was the original pronunciation - assuming that the article is correct in saying that the English spelling pronunciation of Caitlin was at the origin of the name Katelyn, as opposed to a pre-existing name Katelyn sometimes adopting the spelling of the Irish name Caitlín.
