Etymology expansion[edit]

Please expand the etymology section. I noticed that while the French and Italian words for butter can be traced to their Greek and Latin origins, the ones in Portuguese and Spanish can not. And German matches butter perfectly despite not being a Romance language. Alphapeta (talk) 01:06, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The etymology section is about the English name. Wikipedia is not a multilingual dictionary, although it wouldn't be out of place to discuss where the names for butter in different languages come from if there's something interesting to say (with a reliable source, of course). You can always consult wiktionary for Spanish and Portuguese. The names in many languages seem to come from older words meaning 'fat' or 'cow fat'. --Macrakis (talk) 01:23, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
