Racist incident[edit]

I have removed the racist incident from the article lead. It doesn't belong there. As for the incidient itself, I tend to believe that it is not notable enough to be included in the page (Wikipedia is not a newspaper; such incidents happen in many places, and it's not the purpose of Wikipedia to list them all). I am copying the section here; if there's consensus to include it (in a re-written version; an article can't argue with itself), it can be re-added. - Mike Rosoft (talk) 07:43, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken a crack at cleaning up this section. It showed some bias, and the grammar and citation style was poor. I do think the section is noteworthy enough to remain, it having been reported widely. Iglam (talk) 10:30, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Plus, I have removed the mission statement (its inclusion borders on promotional; just about every such institution has this kind of noble goal).

Finally, statements like "It attempts to serve the community of Brentwood, Pennsylvania" have no place in the article. - Mike Rosoft (talk) 07:50, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Racist Incident[edit]

On February 3, 2012, students of the nearly all-white suburban school ran on the court in banana suits and made monkey noises to taunt the players for their rivals, who play for a school which is predominantly African-American. Disturbingly, other Monessen parents claim that the Brentwood players hurled similar racist epithets themselves, calling the Greyhounds "monkeys and cotton pickers," as one Monessen fan told WPXI. The school has not responded by disciplining the students who dressed in the banana suits. "Meanwhile, Valley Independent staff writer Jeremy Sellew claimed that Brentwood Director of Security Joseph Kozarian, who was on duty at the game, refused to intervene, instead sitting back and at one point smiling and laughing with the Brentwood fans in the stands." As with every high school athletic game, there is some trash talking, yet racially motivated trash talking should not be tolerated. [ref]Jeremy Sellew (2012). In the latest development, the school has denied no wrongdoing and after of a review of the video footage has said it was not a hate crime. Apparently, it is common for students at Brentwood to wear banana suits during games - it has been recommended to be their new mascot.

(Please provide citation for the following opinion and do not use the NEWS ARTICLE reference which expresses the OPPOSITE view.) This story has proven to be a one sided story, and the biggest joke of the year. Brentwood fans have worn banana suits in the past, and none of this is racist. This has been worn against schools with no African-Americans, showing that this is not racist. Several sources prove that there was no racial slurs, and that this story has been biased from the beginning.

Second removed section[edit]

The administration/students has issued a statement saying they do not condone derogatory actions. [ref]Brentwood Adminisrators. "Statement from Brentwood Borough School District regarding Brentwood/Monessen Basketball Contest" (PDF).[/ref] However, the school administrators have not punished the students with suspension or explusion. Nothing has occurred other then the school denying the incident happened and that it was not a hate crime. Apparently, banana wearing students are common at their games. [ref]Washington Post. Removal of the Racist Incident[edit]

Until it is cited as being an act of vandalism, the racist incident section and additional statements that were removed provides readers with the information they would be seeking. Statements issued by the school/students in question. Newspaper articles discussing the event.

I find it strange that the SCHOOL's MISSION STATEMENT was also removed. Mission statements are common in every organization and provides readers with a better understanding of the values the school holds important. Reason of Removal because NOT Notable???[edit]

It was on yahoo news and reported by newspapers outside the school's jurisdiction as far as the west coast (WASHINGTON POST).

The birth of a two-headed calf can be in Yahoo News and reported by newspapers outside the event's local area; that doesn't make it relevant for Wikipedia. Also, Washington, D.C., where the Washington Post is published, is not located on the U.S. West Coast. It's on the Potomac River, roughly 200 miles southeast of Brentwood as the crow flies. Two hundred miles is hardly on the other side of the country; it could even be considered the area's regional hub. One would hope that the local school's curriculum doesn't actually leave its students thinking that the nation's capital is on the West Coast, for if it does that would be a scandal. --NellieBly (talk) 09:56, 11 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
