Burnden Park disaster

I find it amazing and sad that an encyclopedic article on Bolton Wanderers carries not so much as a single word of comment on the Burnden Park disaster of 1946. This surely is a major event in the history of Bolton Wanderers Football Club, albeit for very sad reasons. There should be at the very least a mention here with a link directing readers to an article. I also think that the fixture against Stoke should be included in the memorable games section. For guidance check out Glasgow Rangers, Liverpool, Juventus and Bradford City's wiki pages who each devote an entire section of their articles to the similar disasters that have claimed multiple lives of their supporters. Liverpool are one of the 'Top 4', Everton did well last year but need to finish in the top 4 about 8 more times to get into the 'Top 4' category. Everton are ranked as 'best english teams outside top 4' with Bolton and Middlesbrough. as for Borgetti, he signed for Bolton earlier this month. And is part of the Bolton Wanderers squad. Agent003

So basically what you are saying is that it is ok for you to speculate about who may or may not support your team without backing up your statements, but you will not allow anyone else to do the same. I fully understand the removal of some of the more ellaborate claims, but to remove both Ray Stubbs and Simon Weston, is both wrong and somewhat inconsistant when compared to the claims you make on this infomation page.

It is not mine nor any other Tranmere Rovers fans fault that you are incapable of beating us. Nor is it our fault that on the majority of footballing occasions we have met we have humbled you!

Aside from the ridiculous claims to famous fans, one suggests leaving us well alone, that is untill we meet again, then by all means feel free to add another chapter to the TRFC beat Bolton saga!

• Ridiculous claims you say. Whereas Spikey and Kay have been backed up by links to other sites the link for Simon Weston has not, only the noble Weston Spirit. Add a link and I'll say no more.
• You will also notice that I have removed Peter Kay's name a number of times from Bolton's list as it is known that he is a Man U fan.
• As for Ray Stubbs, my problem is this. As I have said before, he played for the club and on his retirement worked for the club. He probably was a fan before he joined the club but to put him in the famous fans section is the same as putting Johnny King and John Aldridge as they are noted elsewhere in the piece. Either have him in one or the other.

IMO the entire section should be removed, as it isn't particularly encyclopedic. Discussions regarding similar sections on other articles generally favour removal e.g 1 2. If someone's support for Bolton is truly notable it can be mentioned in their page. Oldelpaso 19:20, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Best outside top 4

I don't think Bolton actually are generally considered one of the best teams outside the top four. Could you source that please? I'd suggest that a lack of recent trophies, no participation in Europe until this coming season and generally lacklustre performance would suggest that Bolton are far from one of the "best". Note this: "Since then, Bolton Wanderers have preserved their Premiership place with 16th, 17th, 8th and in the season 2004/5 6th place which gave them their first ever qualification for European football." This would suggest that Bolton has been improving but there just isn't any consistent achievement there. Hope the Trotters fans among us won't take it too amiss. Squad list

I have reverted back to the version which uses Template:Football squad player for the playing squad. This format was chosen by consensus following discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football regarding a means of standardising squad lists for all teams. Oldelpaso 20:09, 1 November 2005 (UTC)

I am of the opinion that putting previous club or other biographical information about players is unnecessary as it is available by clicking on the player's name and looking at their article. For year signed, this raises questions, for example should this mean the year the first contract with the club is signed or the year of first team debut? In the West Ham example this varies. Of course, this is all just in my opinion. If you wish to put forward the West Ham style as a proposed standard template, I'd suggest leaving a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Clubs as it will reach more people on there. Memorable Games

Further to the most recent edit on this article, how is anyone considering a 2-2 home draw on the ultimate game of the season 'memorable'. It was quite clearly far from it. The game surely cannot be memorable simply because the team clinched a European place - largely due to results elsewhere in the league.Boothuk 09:20, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Wouldn't that logic also make the 1-1 draw against Portsmouth in the penultimate game of 2005 less than 'memorable', even though Bolton qualified for Europe for the first time on that occasion, because Bolton dominated the match but threw victory away by needlessly gifting their opponents an equaliser and therefore also qualified partly as a result of other results going their way that time as well?

Yeah, that was the point - niether games are memorable simply because they eventually ended up with a European spot. There were far more instrumental games in both seasons. The point is the section is a bit Micky Mouse. Boothuk 07:57, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

I was at Fratton for the 1-1 draw against Portsmouth mentioned above - both sets of fans invaded the pitch at the end (Bolton because they qualified for Europe, and Portsmouth because it meant they had escaped from the relegation trapdoor), so it was to an extent 'memorable' on that angle. I think perhaps a distinction needs to be made between "Memorable Games" and "Memorable Achievements". (Kabuki Shankus 13:12, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

The entire section is point of view and unencyclopedic. Individual matches aren't appropriate for the club article unless highly significant to the club's history. I will remove the section in a fortnight's time if there are no objections. --Jameboy (talk) 23:14, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

I object (well sort of). I feel games like our first game in european competition, cup/play-off finals, the wins against Man Utd and our great draw in Munich should remain. In that case, I would suggest working the truly significant games into the "History" section (with citations of course) and drop the insignificant ones. A separate list like the current one requires properly defined criteria, and being "memorable" certainly isn't that, especially as it depends on whose memory you consult. For me, West Bromwich Albion 4–4 Bolton Wanderers (in 2000 I think) was memorable, for example. --Jameboy (talk) 13:06, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

I certainly would'nt object to working the notable matches into the history section. In fact, its a very good idea! As for the 4-4 vs West Brom, I was at that game and it certainly was a memorable match. I have re-added the section "History" which was removed in this edit. The edit was made by an anon (172.202.96.8 to be specific) and one entire section was removed with no reason given in either the edit summary on on the talk page. I believe that the content that was removed was purely vandalism that went unnoticed for quite a long time, so I have re-added it. Thaurisil 14:08, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

Dates & dashes

Nationality of player

Is that at top level or just U-21/U-19 level? Because you can change which international team you play for if you've only played at the lower level. I.e. Ryan Giggs played for a minor england team before playing at top level with wales. TheProf07 (talk) 19:34, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
