Pluto[edit]

The PLUTO (disney) article says that disney forced the name change from Bluto to Brutus.

I will go change it. It is a rumor. --FuriousFreddy 20:32, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that his name was "Brutus", but Popeye said "Bluto" because Popeye ahd a speech impediment.....John Stewart Miller

Animal House[edit]

There is a blurb at the end of this page under External Links describing Animal House, eventually mentioning the Bluto character and linking to the Animal House wiki page. Shouldn't this be a disambiguation page instead of an external link? Since I'm not sure, I won't edit. Novac 19:10, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bruno[edit]

Someone added that he has also been called "Bruno". I have no knowledge of this, but if someone can provide a source then obviously it should be included... Dr Rgne (talk) 10:25, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of a Bluto spinach use[edit]

This may have been in "Fleets of Stren'th", but I'm going off a 20 year cartoon memory. Popeye and Bluto were beaten up by a group of japan men that were posing as children to get USA secrets. Popeye realized he could not fight the entire Japan navy by himself, so fed spinach to a battered Bluto before taking some himself. IIRC, Bluto became a plane with Popeye as pilot attacking the Japan fleet. MJ56003 (talk) 22:41, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, it's Seein' Red, White 'N' Blue, a 1943 Famous Studios cartoon. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 23:00, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Popeye and Bluto's "Relationship"[edit]

Neither this nor the Popeye article mention the flap a few years ago over the orange-juice commercial that suggested Popeye and Bluto had not only buried the hatchet, but other things as well. Nor is there any discussion or the implied sado-masochism of their fighting.

That's quite an imaginative theory. Any citations? Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 04:57, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bluto or Brutus[edit]

Re the following sentence

Another subtle difference between the characters of Brutus and Bluto is that while Bluto was often portrayed as a fellow sailor who also sought to win the heart of Olive Oyl, Brutus was portrayed as a generic villain, or bank robber, who showed no romantic interest in Olive. Instead, he usually took her hostage, leaving Popeye to rescue her.

Does that not imply that they are separate characters, so should have separate wiki pages--TimothyJacobson (talk) 19:58, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No. This is something that happens in fictional "universes". Due to copyright issues over usage of a specific name of a character. Different production companies will then use the same character, but have to change his/her name, and often make subtle-but-significant changes to the appearance as well. Bluto was "Bluto", "Sonny Boy", "Junior" or "Brutus" depending on who was using the character. But it was all meant to be the exact same guy. Sadly, there will always be a certain type of person who misinterprets this. Thus, we did actually get a comic strip where Bluto and Brutus team up to take on Popeye. Using that, we could possibly state that they are two different characters. But that was never the original intention. The only reason the names "Sonny Boy", "Junior" and "Brutus" were ever used, was because of the contractual minefield over using the name "Bluto". So, it's the SAME character, just renamed, and with his personality tweaked a bit to avoid possible lawsuits. However, the idiot who came up with the "Bluto and Brutus are friends" strip screwed it up for everyone. But most people just choose to ignore that strip. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.133.0.68 (talk) 08:07, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
