Bitcoin Foundation article[edit]

This thread is transferred from the Talk:Bitcoin page.

The Bitcoin Foundation article was previously merged into this one, but I'm tempted to split it back out again now that they have received a lot of recent coverage. Thoughts? Samwalton9 (talk) 17:32, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Arrest of vice chairman[edit]

I added, "In January 2014, the vice chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation's board, Charlie Shrem, was arrested and charged by federal prosecutors with conspiring to commit money laundering." The edit was reverted with summary, "Hold off since he's unknown per WP:WELLKNOWN". @Checkingfax: I read that WP section but I still don't understand how the rule is being applied in this case. He's a pretty well known figure in the Bitcoin community. I believe you, but I don't understand. Could you please elaborate? Chris Arnesen 17:15, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Ratha. He was notable before the arrest. He was also pretty famous in the bitcoin world. I certainly knew who he was already. Media coverage of the arrest definitely mentions the Bitcoin Foundation in a central way. @Checkingfax: It's not true that, "Charlie Shrem was not famous before the arrest. The only notable references to him are dated after his arrest." I also still fail to see how WP:WELLKNOWN applies in this case. As per that article, we should be cautious, but I really think this event deserves to be mentioned. Heck I even provided a link to a verifiable article that shows it was notable when he stepped down from his post. Please elaborate on why the content should not be included. Arrest of Board Member Mark Karpeles[edit]

Please provide a link to this information. As of today, Mark Karpeles is not a board member. And the last information I can find about an 'arrest' happened in France in 2006, before the Foundation existed. --86.147.203.10 (talk) 16:20, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
He wasn't arrested, though he did resign from the board amidst the Mt. Gox debacle. Mark Karpeles is notable. His resignation from the board of the foundation is notable and should be mentioned on this article. I strongly agree with Chris Arnesen. Karpeles has not been arrested. Karpeles was definitely on the board of the Bitcoin Foundation until February 24, 2014.

The so called 'Bitcoin Foundation' legal name 'The Bitcoin Foundation, Inc.' is dissolved in the United States of America on Jun 1 2015, see here: https://imgur.com/a/27Tpgjx. In the United Kingdom is dissolved on August 11, 2015, see here: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/08802555.

The corporation scammed out of people more than 30,000 Bitcoin and it is keeps requesting donations on bitcoinfoundation.org which is illegal under both US and UK law.

Defunct or live[edit]

@SMendel: you make a lot of edits relating to Brock Pierce (and Pierce seems to claim he is the head of this bitcoin organization) and you today edited this article here claiming the organization was live and not defunct. The sources you listed are not WP:RS on this particular article. I could maybe overlook that but when I looked at the sources none seemed to be recent to suggest this org was still live. Jtbobwaysf I do not appreciate your removal of my 100% accurate edit based on false information. If you remove accurate edits in the future we will have to have a wikipedia admin get involved to prevent your further deletion of accurate information on a platform that was built precisely to share accurate information publicly. Tax-exempt status[edit]

While there's currently discussion on WP:AN about this, I think it's probably wise to list its tax-exempt status based upon the IRS's website, as the IRS is the ultimate WP:RS when it comes to U.S. tax statuses. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 00:33, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I reverted the IP address editors addition since I couldnt WP:V it. The the IP address editor added a url link in the edit summary that appears to be from IRS (I still havent verified it). The reason for this is due to the existence of multiple Bitcoin Foundations worldwide, not all of which have a Wikipedia page. By maintaining the current article name, we may inadvertently defame other Bitcoin Foundations that have no affiliation with the corporation managed solely by Brock Pierce, without any other members.
