"Under the Ice"[edit]

The latest Fall 2016 season is no longer "Under the Ice", it's just "Bering Sea Gold" with no distinguishing between this and the non-ice summer mining season show spring TV season show. This proves the two shows are not two shows, they are one show. "Under the Ice" is just something to separate the TV seasons -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 14:50, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: Procedural close. Isn't this a bit of a hornet's nest! Since this discussion has not really been about renaming the two pages, but about merging the content, a procedural close is the correct way to go. This page apparently was created in January 2013 and moved to mainspace by AeroByte, just before the merge proposal that closed as No consensus. That seems to have changed a bit in this discussion. What this situation seems to call for is summed up by RadioKAOS : ...there should be one article to provide an encyclopedic overview of the program / franchise / whatever it is, while forking off the episode list(s) onto another article. So it appears that a comprehensive merge with that restructuring in mind is what needs to be discussed to make this subject more encyclopedic. Caution to the involved editors, because what often happens is that someone will re-create the "Under the Ice" article after it's been merged and redirected to Bering Sea Gold (if that garners consensus), so you might want to keep an eye out for that. – The show formerly called "Under the Ice" no longer carries that title. For the last two seasons, it's been called "Bering Sea Gold" while the companion show has always been called "Bering Sea Gold". This either indicates that there has never been two separate TV shows, and it has always only been one TV show (ie. like 'SASUKE spring' and 'SASUKE autumn'), or there is no functional difference between the two shows (ie. like "Wipeout" and "Wipeout: Winter Edition"). As the "Under the Ice" show no longer carries that title, (not since 2014) it needs to be renamed. The "Under the Ice" show documents the spring dredging season under the sea ice (which aired in the autumn), while the original titled show documented the summer dredging season (which aired in the spring). Functionally, this could mean that "Under the Ice" be renamed Bering Sea Gold (formerly "Under the Ice") or Bering Sea Gold (spring mining season) or Bering Sea Gold (autumn TV season), and the originally named show could be Bering Sea Gold (not formerly "Under the Ice") or Bering Sea Gold (summer mining season) or Bering Sea Gold (spring TV season). If these two are in fact not two separate shows but only one show, then the articles should be merged.   • Restructure – Both articles are emblematic of the sort of puffery magnets seen far too often lately in our coverage of reality television. They are dominated by tables, templates and the weakest sources imaginable, in many cases sources little removed from the producers' own press releases. The objective appears to be content for content's sake rather than a regard for article quality, as shown in the unnecessarily redundant nature of a lot of the aforementioned content elements. Contrast that with the barest minimum of useable prose, which should have been the first priority (see WP:INDISCRIMINATE). Based on a few past discussions, I get the impression that the reality TV project encourages rather than discourages this sort of garbage. Our coverage of Ice Road Truckers comes a whole lot closer to reflecting a proper encyclopedia entry, as opposed to a half-assed jumble of content reflecting slavish devotion to a particular manual of style more than anything else. Taking coverage of IRT as an example, there should be one article to provide an encyclopedic overview of the program / franchise / whatever it is, while forking off the episode list(s) onto another article. That doesn't address my concerns. As of late, our coverage of reality television has shifted too far in the direction of articles which are dominated by a lot of pretty-looking formatting, presumably to cover up the blatantly-obvious lack of substance. Is it the intent of other participants in this discussion to have two articles, neither of which are really encyclopedia entries but rather episode guides masquerading as encyclopedia entries? If so, are you reading WP:INDISCRIMINATE differently than I am? Look at the newly-created article on The Last Alaskans. As you can see, I PRODed it, which was removed by its creator with no explanation other than "this is absurd". No, let me tell you what's absurd. Encyclopedic content is supposed to be written for a general audience, not "by fanboys, for fanboys". A general audience would include people such as myself who don't watch television. Looking at that article when I first came upon it as well as right now, it provides NO INFORMATION WHATSOEVER as to what the program is even about. Instead, it's only an episode guide with the barest minimum of content-for-content's-sake otherwise. The article creator appears to expect that we should have to click on the references to get any real information about the program. I'm perfectly capable of finding the New York Times website for myself just fine without being expected to use a Wikipedia article as an intermediary step. Just about every reality television-related article I've come across the past few years has followed this same mindless, by-the-numbers pattern. This is why I pointed out the Ice Road Truckers article for comparison purposes. Are we really treating the readership as if they're that stupid and that they can't see right through this like I have? The merge proposal #Merge Bering Sea Gold and Bering Sea Gold: Under The Ice was made in 2013, no record of why there was no consensus to do it but I'm guessing it was because the merged article, if it contained the level of detail of the current ones, would be rather long. The merge proposal was discussed at talk:Bering Sea Gold#Merger proposal (2013) where it was claimed that the two shows were separate shows. That is no longer evident, since the "two" shows have the exact same title for the last few years. No one would know what this "Under the Ice" show is about if they're recent viewers, since the show does not use that title, and both shows use the same title now (if they were ever separate shows). "Under The Ice" originally was part of the other show article before someone split that article in two and sent it here in 2013. -- 65.94.171.217 (talk) 07:04, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
