Parish Boundaries

What is meant by "the boundaries of the parish"? Are we talking about the grounds immediately surrounding a church building (in which case, I would think walking the boundaries would take at most a few minutes)? Or is the "parish" a larger territory? Are we talking several square miles for a typical parish? Hundreds of square miles? 71.219.242.203 (talk) 14:02, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

A Parish in historical terms normally related to the ecclesiastical parish and would be a delineated area reaching out to that of the next parish. Some amy be less than 100acres others maybe 1000 acres. But in all such cases they would be circumnavigated even if it took several days. Not all perambulations were around the church's administrative boundaries some wre around manorial territories or towns including harbours. Since 1885 in England these church parishes were largely replaced as the administrative body by civil parishes and perambulations occur around both today Tmol42 (talk) 22:54, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Modern Observations

I can remember beating the bounds as a child in the late 1980s. A group of children from my primary school in the City of London would be taken each year to beat the bounds. We wore fancy dress and at each boundary a different child was tossed up in a blanket (presumably instead of knocking us on the stones!). The ceremony was accompanied by various officials from the City. I remember it finishing with refreshments in a very grand room, but I'm not sure whether it was the Guildhall or part of St Bartholomew's Hospital - both of these sites were connected with the parish boundaries.Redcore4 (talk) 22:18, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

I remember it too, late 80s / early 90s, in a more rural parish where the boundaries were streams and fields. Took about a day; as far as I was concerned (aged 8 or 9) it was just a long walk, but there was a bit of a sense of occasion about it. Nobody thrown up in blankets or bashed on stones though :-)
