Old comment[edit]

This is a great article, but it contains a few inexact statements that I'll take the liberty of correcting as soon as I find the time. Nevertheless, I think it is important to hear the feedback of anyone interested in the subject.

It is stated here that Black Hawk had the compromise of other tribes and the British to help him in his endeavor. Yet, every source I've consulted concur to say that both promises were either exaggerated or plain lies of his advisors, Neapope and the Winnebago prophet White Cloud. If I (and thus the sources I've been able to access) are wrong, please, let me know. Thanks, Phaedriel 22:34, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Historic details are disputed[edit]

The exact details of the encounter between Black Hawk's envoy and Stillman's militia is not historically clear. There are several reputable versions of the encounter, and this article only provides one point of view.

Some don't include the present of a second Sauk group, some say Stillman's militia had an interpreter, some believe the militia men were drunk. etc.

Consider adding a section mentioning the conflicting history. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.148.10.122 (talk) 04:04, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Corrected statements[edit]

I reread the source in which I based this article on. I have corrected the mistatement.

The Battle of Horseshoe Bend is linked to the Black Hawk War. Can some one please remove it.

Still needs citation[edit]

The following are the only statements that still need citations in the article.

  • The two statements following:
  • The military expedition was turned over to U.S. General Henry Atkinson, who Black Hawk would address as "White Beaver."[citation needed] Atkinson did not attempt to attack the band, noting that Black Hawk had not committed any act of violence, and that his forces were not numerous to lead an attack.[citation needed]
  • Reworded, removed, clarified and cited. IvoShandor 08:17, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Illinois Governor John Reynolds viewed the return of Black Hawk as an invasion, and immediately called up the Militia, and requested Federal support.[citation needed]
Cited. IvoShandor 08:17, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The following needs the section about Whiteside referenced.
  • On 14 May 1832, a detachment of 275 militia under the command of Majors Isaiah Stillman and David Bailey, from the main force commanded by General Samuel Whiteside,[citation needed] were resting after a long march in the summer heat.
  • Noted vague orders, clarified, reworded, and cited. IvoShandor 08:17, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • The miltia camp was located about three miles east of the Rock River in present day Stillman Valley, Illinois.[citation needed]
  • The remains of the slain soldiers were later located and buried near the site of the battlefield on a small bluff overlooking what would later be named Stillman Creek.[citation needed]
  • Removed and better sentence with cites added. IvoShandor 09:19, 12 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA review[edit]

Hi there, nice article, I have a couple of points for you to address before I pass this piece, but it shouldn't be a problem for you. Nice work.

  • General points
  • The article suffers from over use of commas which break up the text and make it harder to read. Consider reading through and removing a few. If you want help with this then let me know.
  • I am working on this, however, some of the changes in wording that would be necessary to remove some commas would affect the accuracy of the article. If you see any that can be reworked please do so, I have went through the lead and prelude sections (divided the prelude into background and prelude per WP:MILHIST. Many of the commas I saw were serial commas which can stay or go either way, it doesn't matter to me. IvoShandor 20:04, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Particular points
  • In the lead link Isaiah Stillman and remove the word "aptly": it may be correct, but it doesn't sound neutral. Make it "had ignited", link Mississippi River, put the phrase "British Band" in inverted commas, it is an unfamiliar term and a little confusing until explained. ". . . the battle erupted when" rather than after. Link John Giles Adams.
  • These points have been addressed, though I would note that the battle did not begin until after the militia pursued the Sauk back to their camp. Black Hawk was attempting to negotiate a truce.IvoShandor 19:36, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • In lead it isn't clear whether Lincoln was present, not present, or whether his presence was still under investigation. Some clarification is needed.
  • This, in general, isn't clear. There is little more I can do to clarify other than say it is unclear. IvoShandor 19:27, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I tried to clarify this a bit in the lead. Reliable sources are hard to come by on this contentious point. Obviously, many of the parties involved in investigating such a claim have a vested interest in the outcome. IvoShandor 19:38, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Say a little something about how the Sauk were removed: forcibly, by the army, by settlers etc.
  • This should be clear now that it was via a treaty. IvoShandor 19:36, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • How can Atkinson have written something and not been informed of it. It is not clear where Stillman's orders originated from (if it is historically unclear then this needs some explination).
  • Should have read Reynold's hand and not Atkinson's. Too many names to keep clear, hopefully this makes sense now. IvoShandor 19:45, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since "Cass" is linked in Lincoln's speech, then "Hull" should be too.--Jackyd101 19:10, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I will unlink Cass as I don't know who Hull is, and reading over the MOS it appears links are undesirable in quotations. IvoShandor 19:27, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • All wikilinks in quotations removed. IvoShandor 19:46, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The other points I will address soon. IvoShandor 19:27, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I like what you've done with the article and well done on addressing my comments, I'll be happy to pass this when you are done (drop me a line).--Jackyd101 01:15, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I reckon this article is GA quality and I'll pass it. If there is anything from above not yet done (I can't see anything but just in case) then you can finish it afterwards, theres nothing important enough to hold this back. --Jackyd101 00:00, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GA Sweeps Review: Pass[edit]

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the requirements of the GA criteria. I'm specifically going over all of the "Conflicts, battles and military exercises" articles. I made several corrections myself throughout the article. I believe the article currently meets the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I have edited the article history to reflect this review. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 06:36, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
