May 5th 2021 "notability" edits[edit]

This edit (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Baseball5&oldid=1021699424) is wrong in at least one way: Baseball5 is not an "experimental" variant of baseball/softball (the WBSC website doesn't seem to indicate that B5 is anything other than a new variation that they will wholeheartedly support into the future alongside baseball/softball), and B5 is not just going to be played in tournaments staged by its proposer, since the 2026 Youth Olympic Games are set to feature B5. Rule questions?[edit]

  • So if the batter whiffs (misses the ball) on the attempt to hit the ball, the batter is out. Correct?
  • When attempting to hit the ball, must the batter release the ball from the opposite hand? Or may it be either hand?
  • In the act of hitting, may the ball be released such that it bounces off the ground and then hit after the bounce? Or must the ball be hit directly upon being released?
  • For a batter to be called out due to lack of momentum to reach the outfield fence, the defense would need to let the ball roll until it stops, without touching it. Correct? In that situation, runners must be required to return to their bases. Correct?

1. Swing and a miss is an out. From page 11 of the 2021 rulebook (https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/static.wbsc.org/assets/cms/documents/66cb0d33-f7dc-8877-1ed1-c7dc893642a2.pdf): "How the offensive players eliminate themselves due to an illegal behaviour/action... • By completely missing the ball in the attempt of hitting".
2. For your second question, if you are asking whether, once a batter has designated which hand they plan to hit with, they can then toss the ball up using that very hand and then hit it while it hangs in the air, I'd guess the answer is yes.
3. I think it's less likely that they'd allow what you suggested in your third question.
4. For the fourth question, the answer to both parts of it is yes; the defense needs to let the ball roll without touching it to get the batter out, and because the failure of the ball to reach the fence would signify an illegal hit, the play would be negated and runners would safely return to their bases. I can't point to rulebook sources for this second part, but I've observed in a great many games the differentiation made between illegal hits (where the batter is out for doing something like stepping out of the box, or hitting an "illegal home run", and thus runners return) and defensively-made outs. A good example of the ball-reaching-fence rule comes from the 2021 Taiwan Championship, with the batter ending up out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSXx4iJ-lEE&t=4324s, and a replay with a better angle at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSXx4iJ-lEE&t=4408s), though note that the scoreboard initially marks him as having scored.
