Requested move 15 February 2017[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: not moved. Ultimately it comes down to what is used in sources and those in favour of "Election Commission of Bangladesh" have not been able to show that it is the most common name. No prejudice against a new RM with either of Worldbruce's proposed titles, he provided some good sources for them. Jenks24 (talk) 08:00, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Election Commission BangladeshElection Commission of Bangladesh – grammatically incorrect and not a common name! 89.0.120.123 (talk) 16:09, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Election Commission Bangladesh is the actual name of the organisation; the fact that it's been written incorrectly elsewhere doesn't mean we should repeat the mistake. As it's a name rather than a sentence, it can't really be deemed grammatically incorrect (see Arts Council England or Health Education England as similar examples of several nouns being stuck together to make the name of an organisation). • Grammar is an unpersuasive argument for change. The official website is titled "Election Commission Bangladesh", copyrighted that way, and uses that name in its welcome text. However, other sources suggest the website could be an aberration.
The organisation's constituency maps for the 2008 election, for example, use Bangladesh Election Commission. The link on the government's national web portal is similarly বাংলাদেশ নির্বাচন কমিশন (lit. Bangladesh Election Commission) rather than নির্বাচন কমিশন বাংলাদেশ as it is on the organisation's website. Banglapedia (the national encyclopedia of Bangladesh) uses Election Commission,[1] as does the Historical Dictionary of Bangladesh,[2] and the flurry of recent press coverage (in The Daily Star, bdnews24.com, The New Nation, etc.) related to the transition from the 11th commission to the 12th. Academic papers appear fairly evenly split between Bangladesh Election Commission and simply Election Commission. --Worldbruce (talk) 05:53, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. The current title is not the actual name, it is a translation, a bad ungrammatical translation. A grammatical translation is "Bangladesh Election Commission", or "Election Commission of Bangladesh". Word order can change in translation. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 00:00, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. I don't see why this is hard. Homunq () 14:23, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Someone just moved it to Bangladesh Election Commission. Dubious process action, but I agree with the move. In the above RM discussion, I think COMMONNAME is a weak argument when discussing translations of something in a foreign language. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 23:47, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is the very small stub about a search committee for commission members in 2022 that last for less than a month. The target article is only start class and the content can be easily moved there. Vinegarymass911 (talk) 03:42, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
