Backdrop CMS is an Open source, community-developed, Content Management System (CMS)[4], written in PHP {cite}, and intended to remain free under the GNU General Public License.[3]. Backdrop CMS was forked from Drupal CMS {cite} in 2013 by two Drupal developers, Nate Lampton (née Nate Haug) and Jen Lampton. The Backdrop CMS project was forked during the early phases of the development of version 8 of Drupal CMS and therefore is similar to version 7 of the Drupal CMS, maintaining most of the same functionality and features, but retains some features newly included in Drupal version 8 .

History

Backdrop's founders announced the fork in blog post in 2013 {cite}, expressing the motivation for the fork as being concern over the significant software changes coming to Drupal 8, and concern that maintainers of existing smaller Drupal websites would be unable to manage these changes and the perceived cost that comes with them[4]. Responses to the new project were varied, with some expressing concern for possible division of the Drupal community and others the need to support smaller website devlopers.

Technology

Installation of Backdrop requires a web server running PHP 5.3.2 or higher and a MySQL 5.0.15 database or higher (or equivalent, like MariaDB).[7] Backdrop versions are tested on PHP version 5 and PHP version 7. Backdrop core, and the majority of contributed modules are developed on the GitHub platform. Docker-based local development environments like DDEV[8] and Lando[9] support Backdrop CMS by providing Backdrop CMS as an installation option. Backdrop is also available as an installation option on the managed hosting platform, Pantheon[5]. CiviCRM, the open source CRM focused on non-profits, officially supports Backdrop, in addition to Wordpress and Drupal.

Philosophy & Mission

Backdrop CMS's philosophy is a focus on an affordable CMS for small to medium-sized businesses, non-profits, educational institutions, and other organizations[5]. There are upgrade paths available to developers who wish to upgrade Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 sites to Backdrop.[10] Backdrop CMS is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy [16].
