WTF?[edit]

This is an incredibly confusing article. Are the original authors trying to say that this figure is a goddess in all of the named cultures, and that her name was the same in all of these cultures? I hardly know where to start with this. --Kathryn NicDhàna 05:44, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

goddess??[edit]

I have a hard time believing that Bebhinn is "as much a Welsh goddess as she is an Irish one"...The name at least looks very Gaelic, and the etymology given is quite Gaelic. Also, I don't understand the whole "Goddess of Pleasure" attribute (why capitalized?)...Is it possible that she's only a giantess or a folkloric figure without being a goddess? Personally, I define goddess as a divine female figure who is in some way worshipped. Now, in Celtic mythology, there is very little evidence for the worship of quite a few figures that are generally accepted to be deities, but how long is the limb we must go out on in order to consider Bebhinn a goddess?...If someone would just give a reputable source for her goddess-ship, I'm sure that'd be much appreciated by people. I have never heard of this variant of name or the godess herself. The only resemblance i know of is Bebo, the wife of the leprecaun king in "The Death of Fergus mac Leide", however there's no direct connection from her to this "Bebhinn" Either this article should cite its sources or else be deleted, as its factuality is very doubtful.

Bebhinn or Bevin is supposed to be related to the the name Vivian/Vivienne. MacKillop says Vivian is an Anglicization of Bébinn, but that it's otherwise unrelated to the French. This could be massivley cut and turned into a stub about the Irish figures who bore that name - a possible goddess who was the sister of Boann, and a few other mentions of related figures in tales. Though whether we really need a whole article is debatable. Do you want me to slash this down to what can be cited, move it to the proper name, and then decide if it's worth keeping as a stub? ~ Kathryn NicDhàna ♫♦♫ 00:35, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
