Naming[edit]

I think that Arbat should be a disambiguation page; Arbat may mean Old Arbat Street, New Arbat Street or Arbat (district). User:Fisss

  • That sounds reasonable and straightforward. Should this article be at Old Arbat or Arbat Street? Currently we have a page name/bold title mismatch. Alai (talk) 23:02, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The German article (which is a featured article on German Wikipedia) claims that the street is officially called Arbat, and that Old Arbat is a common designation, used to distinguish it from the street called New Arbat. In that case, the current name of the English Wikipedia article is incorrect, and the introductory section of the current English article needs correcting. I suppose we need sources to resolve this issue. Harlandski (talk) 01:46, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Having thought about this whilst translating the German page, I have decided to stick with "the Arbat", as this is the best approximation of the historical Russian name Арбат. I would argue that "Arbat Street" is wrong, as that would be Арбатская улица in Russian, which is the name of a street in Kolomna (see #Origins and etymology), but not of this street in Moscow. I haven't resolved the question of whether the street is officially called "Old Arbat" Старый арбат, but I will do so when I am next in Moscow. Harlandski (talk) 22:14, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Translation from German[edit]

Is anyone else working on translating material from the German article? I am keen to start working on this. Harlandski (talk) 20:22, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As you can see, I have now started translating. Please let me know if you are also working on this, or interested in doing so. Harlandski (talk) 09:44, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am also editing the English intro as I go along with the translation. Where possible, I am moving relevant material to other sections of the article, so as to be left with a desirable length for the introduction. Harlandski (talk) 22:14, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
