Speedy nomination[edit]

Please explain how this person does not meet Wikipedia:Notability (people), which states: "A person is presumed to be notable if he or she has been the subject of published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject." Aside from the sources given in the article, a simple Google News search shows that there is no shortage whatsoever of respected, third-party media agencies covering this person. To suggest that this does not establish notability per Wikipedia's aforementioned notability guideline is, frankly, absurd. faithless (speak) 00:52, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Let me stress that playing first-team ball (i.e. passing WP:ATHLETE), is not a prerequisite for establishing the notability of an athlete. Rather, it is a handy guide which generally (but certainly not always) is a good barometer. In this case, it is not, as Peterlin passes the general notability guideline of being the subject of "published secondary source material which is reliable, intellectually independent, and independent of the subject." faithless (speak) 01:06, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Because he hasn't done anything yet. He attended a trial at Everton, and is being offered a contract. He hasn't played a single minute of pro ball anywhere, hasn't even SIGNED the contract yet (and may not for all we know - he might break his leg tomorrow and never play again) and has nothing of note in his amateur and college career. Dozens and dozens of soccer players are on the books of pro teams but don't have articles because they haven't actually achieved anything to make them notable. That's why we (should) wait until they actually *play* a game before we start creating articles willy-nilly. If we have the article before he actually does anything, and then goes on to achieve nothing, all we'd be left with is an article about a totally unmemorable soccer player who once had a few articles written about him in relation to a contract with Everton. --JonBroxton (talk) 03:20, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't matter if he hasn't "done anything." The only real criterion to be notable is receiving non-trivial coverage by third-part media outlets. This is what separates Peterlin from the dozens and dozens of players you mention - they haven't received coverage from Sports Illustrated, ESPN, the New York Times, BBC, etc. Whether he has actually accomplished anything is no longer relevant; he has received extensive media attention from the top media outlets in the world, and that makes him notable by our standards. faithless (speak) 03:29, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For comparable situations, one needs only to consider articles such as LeBron James (created just after James graduated high school, months before he played a professional game) and O. J. Mayo (created when Mayo was a sophomore in high school), and many others. Accomplishments are often what garners the media attention, but it is the media coverage itself which bestows notability, and Peterlin has received plenty of media coverage. Not to beat a dead horse, but it is not a person's success in their given field that determines their notability, but rather the amount and degree of press coverage they receive. These often go hand in hand, but certainly not always - when was the last time Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian did anything of any consequence? That's all well and good, and I can't argue with your logic, but I was simply upholding consensus. Take a look at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Anton Peterlin (footballer) and you'll see that the vast majority of footy editors take the same stance. You're right there, and I admit that I was unaware that there was a previous article until you nominated this one. But my contention is that just because a mistake was made in deleting it before is no reason to repeat that mistake. Yes, this can be speedied under G4, but I don't think any reasonable editor would think that that is the right course of action. Often in sports-related AfDs editors put too much stock in WP:ATHLETE while ignoring WP:N as a whole. faithless (speak) 22:56, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stats discrepancy[edit]

The infobox lists four games for Plymouth, yet the table only has three (two League and one cup). The infobox should only show League games, but either way it doesn't match the table, so which is right..........? -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 22:15, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
