The basic plot of the film revolves around Bobby (Christian Bale), a mentally challeneged boy who runs away from home after his cruel step-father kills his pets. He meets a withdrawn, eccentric, animal lover named Mr Summers and the two gain a predictable friendship as Bobby helps Mr Summers bury wildlife killed on the roads nearby. The movie should be written off as a cliched piece of overtly-sentimental cinema, but as the film progresses the acting skills of Hurt and Bale really come into the fore. As a mentally challenged runaway, Bale does excellently not to overdo the eccentricities of the role, a skill mirrored by Hurt playing such an unusual character withdrawn from civilisation. Both roles in other hands could be disatserous, but instead pull together a film which builds up to an emotional climax. The film is no classic but as a film, but should be seen simply for the performances of the films stars. An ambient soundtrack and simplistic filming techniques help to build on the natural feel to the film, but as a result it is hard to really become engrossed fully in the film.
