Aldo does not equal altus[edit]

The German, Spanish, French, and Italian versions of this entry all say something different, and do not refer to altus at all:

Aldo is a male Italian first name. Aldous in English.

Of Germanic origin, the name Aldo should be derived from the root ald (alt in modern German), with the literal meaning of old or, loosely speaking, experienced, wise. A second hypothesis, however, sees this as a feature name from the ancient High German athal (edel in modern German), meaning noble, of noble birth. It should be added, for clarity, that both these terms are very common in the onomastics of Germanic origin and often are confused with each other: as an example, think of names such as ancient Aldighiero, Aldobrandro, Aldovino , etc., are also subject to an ambiguous interpretation - because of the root-Ald precisely
