Ragaba?[edit]

@Mariamnei: hi! Welcome to the club, hope you'll enjoy it here in spite of what's going on.

I need your advice.

At Alexander Jannaeus, the Ragaba of his death is wikilinked to Al-Rajib, in the Amman Governorate, where a) it might be a bit too far inland/east, but what do I know; and b) it says nothing about a Hellenistic fortress, or Jannaeus. I've been there and I wouldn't know how to fortify it either.

Rajeb/Rajib in the Ajloun Governorate however has everything going for it.

So, redo the wikilink at Jannaeus?

Is there a good source identifying Rajeb with Josephus' Ragaba? I couldn't find any :(

We need some kind of disambiguation. Rajib and er-Rajib is the same (once with, oncr w/o definite article; al-, el-, ar-, er- are one and the same when preceding a noun starting w. an R).

Thanks, and have a great time! Arminden (talk) 03:25, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Arminden, and thanks for the warm welcome! Certainly, there's a reliable source that does just that. Check out Avi-Yonah's Gazzetter of Roman Palestine. On page 90, he discusses Josephus' Ragaba (which is the same as the Mishna's Regev) and identifies this location as the modern Rajib. He includes the Palestine Grid coordinates 216/183, which will lead you precisely to Rajeb.
I'll handle the mention of Jannaeus. Could you manage the disambiguation? Honestly, I'm not quite sure how to do it :D Mariamnei (talk) 13:58, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, what do you mean by "in spite of what's going on"? :) Mariamnei (talk) 14:01, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, you've got the right spirit!
There is a very dogged ideology-driven fight in every corner of the so-called "I/P", Israel/Palestine field, which reached a fever pitch since Oct. 7 and the Israel-Hamas war. You can't avoid stepping on mines even in just remotely related areas, like ancient things or theology, and the explosions lead to stalking, bad blood, edit blocks, "Wiki trials" and ppl leaving with disgust and burnout syndrom. So try hard to stay out of it, it's a nasty ground largely taken over by activism. There's still enough space to breath if you're aware of it. So keep up the good work! Cheers, Arminden (talk) 14:20, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow, that doesn't sound too good, but I'll take that as a challenge. So first, Thanks for the heads up! Do you think there are any steps that could be taken to improve things? Mariamnei (talk) 15:39, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No :))
Emotions are very high. If you stick to ancient topics, it might save you from unpleasant encounters. I'm curious how Category:Jewish settlement in Transjordan will fare, but being so technical might mean that nobody will notice or care. And it's hard to argue with archaeological reality, Josephus, etc., but it's been done before.
Sorry, just letting some steam out. You go ahead and see, mayby I'm just a grumpy ole' guy. Arminden (talk) 23:40, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Part of Greater Amman Municipality?[edit]

The Governorate is quite large, but to me it felt that Rajeb was still inside Amman, not all that far from Downtown. So, isn't it part of Greater Amman Municipality? If so, which district? Thanks. Arminden (talk) 13:06, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I see it's around the spot where Qweismeh and Kherbet as-Souk meet Uhod. Arminden (talk) 13:14, 23 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Elhady514: Hi. Shall I understand that Rajib is within the Qweismeh area? If so, it should be added to the article proper, not just under "See also", but is that a sure fact? Thanks. Arminden (talk) 07:34, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arminden: Hi. Yes, Rajib is a town in the Qweismeh area, which is part of the Greater Amman Municipality. I'll add it. Elhady514 (talk) 21:19, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Elhady514. Now we have it. I've combed through the infobox a bit. You called it simply Rajib, so you'd agree that in English the article al- can be dropped, right? Arminden (talk) 21:42, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arminden Yes, it can be dropped. It means "the". Elhady514 (talk) 22:41, 7 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
