Busch Quartet cellist[edit]

In terms of recordings made, and commercially available from the 1950s to date, the principal cellist with the Busch Quartet was Adolf Busch's brother Hermann, rather than Paul Grümmer. Known recordings with Hermann Busch span at least from 1932 to 1947. I'm aware of only one recording credited as having been made with Grümmer, the Beethoven Op 59 No. 3 quartet, recorded in November 1933. According to liner notes written by Tully Potter for a 3-disc set of late Beethoven quartets issued by Biddulph Recordings as LAB-083 through -085, Hermann joined Adolf Busch's piano trio, with Rudolf Serkin, in the mid 1920s, and replaced Grümmer in the string quartet in 1930. However, these three Biddulph CDs, ranging in date from 1932 to 1941, do not specify the quartet's personnel. The Beethoven Op 135 quartet was also recorded in November 1933, and thus presumably included Grümmer rather than Hermann Busch. Preiser Records CD 90172, including Beethoven quartets Nos. 9, 11, 14 & 15, specify Hermann Busch in the September 1932 Op 95, but Grümmer only in the November 1933 C Major. I have not seen Potter's 2010 biography of Adolf Busch; perhaps this book will clear up these questions of personnel. Milkunderwood (talk) 07:38, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Grummer played on the slightly earlier HMV recording of Beethoven Op 95.The latets EMI reissue of the late Beethoven Quartet recordings confirms that Wilhelm Busch was the cellist on the recording of Op 135, and -from memory- the 78s of Op 59 Number 3 show he also played on that recording too. One onine account suggests Grummer retired in 1930, but the Op 95 recording is later than that - i think 1932, though it sounds technically earlier. If the date is correct, Grummer retired when just over 50 - early for a successful musician. Delahays (talk) 13:46, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
