Resources for consideration in expanding[edit]

It is my impression that the term "adaptive enzyme" is a historical one, largely replaced now by the related term "inducible gene", hailing from the early days of molecular embryology when there was still controversy over the ability of the same genes in an organism giving rise to multiple cell types. However, that impression is from relatively limited searching; a historian of science or a person with long developmental biology experience might be able to clarify that further. Things to consider: whether this article should be merged with inducible gene; whether the name should be change to the related enzymatic adaptation, thus focusing on the process rather than the player; whether this article should be merged with Adaptation (biology); composition of a new article that includes the concepts of "enzymatic adaptation", inducible gene, immediate early gene (and related time-frame defined gene expression responses), "environmental insult", and "stimulus/response at the molecular level".
