19th Century Novels[edit]

The introductory paragraph states that 'the novel is used in studies of the Nineteenth Century novel' or something similar. Isn't this observation empty, a bit like noting that the plays of Shakespeare are used in studies of Shakespeare? Should it be removed? Can the references it makes to other studies be retained? Character articles[edit]

I have tidied up the character list a little by arranging a few of them into families. What do people think of certain characters having their own articles? --MacRusgail 20:08, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure, if we were to have them they should be clearly only the lead or main character that had this treatment. They need to satisfy the normal notability criteria for articles. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:23, 14 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have created articles for Adam Bede (character), Dinah Morris and Hetty Sorrel. I will also create one for Captain Arthur Donnithorne, and that shall be it. These are the four main characters and are more worthy of articles IMHO than the various Pokemon characters kicking about wikipedia. --MacRusgail 19:38, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure that seperate character articles are entirely necessary, and the character list seems 'boringly' long. Let's just keep it to the main protagonists and most important minor characters. Also, the reference to Nature in the novel is completely mundane - this seems to bear no significance in the story and don't really see its relevance here.Ivankinsman 20:05, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Irrelevant[edit]

This part of the introduction seems irrelevant to me:

"...and is used in university studies of 19th century English literature."

It's not used exclusively at universities, as this implies. Agree, disagree? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.65.182.34 (talk) 23:10, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

genre painting[edit]

Though I have no problem with the fact the book may have influenced art in the day there is a quote "Houssaye speaks (p, 179) of Terborch's "gout tout hollandais, empreint de poesie realiste", and argues that "l'oeuvre de Gerard de Terburg est le roman intime de la Hollande, comme l'oeuvre de Gerard Dow en est le roman familiere." " is it possible to have a translation of this in English, I would but unfortunately I would need to use Google translate and it sounds clunky Amanda138a (talk) 11:19, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
