Censorship[edit]

Untitled[edit]

Why was the section "Supply to Iraqi weapons program" removed on 29 June 2007? (This "censorship" was performed by a non-registered user). Kuke 10:57, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete information. The citation regarding the supply of certain microorganisms to the Iraq edical School neglected to state that the shipments were made under export licenses from the U.S. Department of Commerce after review by the U.S. Dept of Defense. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.60.109.115 (talk) 13:24, 8 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The solution seems simple enough: rather than delete factual information, simply include additional information needed to make clear that the ATCC was not criminally trafficking biological weapons. It's now very relevant to see the that U.S. foreign-policy establishment has a history of judging poorly what belligerent dictatorships will do with disease research. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8806:1002:3800:D010:85F:4708:BDA1 (talk) 15:12, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

It always seems challenging to find good secondary sources for companies and such, especially a niche company like ATCC. But anyway, here's what I've got:

  • A chapter of a book from the National Academies Press titled "Resource Sharing in Biomedical Research". There's a chapter all about ATCC and how it works and what it's inventory and processing look like. Tragically it's from 1996. So the numbers are all probably pretty stale, but maybe there's other good info in there?
  • Pro-Publica has some of ATCC's financials here. They also look a few years out of date, but maybe there's a way to get fresher numbers?
Not sure what you're looking for, but long before anyone's finished filing their Tax Year 2020 tax returns, Pro-Publica (and many other sources) has IRS 990 forms for ATCC for Tax Year 2018, so that's only one year out of date. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8806:1002:3800:D010:85F:4708:BDA1 (talk) 15:16, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Here's a paragraph sent in to Science Mag in 1925 notifying people that the ATCC catalogue would soon be released. Interesting bit of history.
  • There was a lawsuit brought by a veterans group against ATCC for supplying biological materials to Saddam's Iraq. Here's a really brief NYT article about it. I don't think the lawsuit ended up going anywhere. As I recall, all biological transfers to other countries had to be approved by the U.S. Gov't and these ones were. So my understanding was that there was no reason ATCC would have stopped the sale. But maybe someone can find more info on that? A google search didn't yield much in the way of sources reporting on it (which reinforces my impression that the lawsuit didn't go anywhere). Here's a court decision of it getting thrown out of a Texas court (I think. I don't speak Legalese).

Anyway hopefully with that stuff we can get a start on cleaning up this article. I'm sure there's gotta be more sources out there. ATCC is a pretty big deal. Happy editing! Ajpolino (talk) 06:20, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
