311 and God

I cannont find any mention of god on any 311 recording (though i haven't looked too hard). I know they are very spiritual people, but it seems very progressive of them to take this stance. There also are more references to science and what not on their albums. any thoughts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.203.23.88 (talk) 23:59, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Racism accusations

This section needs to be rewritten or dropped entirely. "False claims of racism" is POV (the article should present both the accusation and the band's rebuttal in a neutral tone), the lyrics should be mentioned in the prose instead of quoted in full, and the current prose interjecting the fact that one member of the band happens to be Hispanic is awkward at best (and a bit racist in and of itself at worst). I'll give it a day or two to see if there's any consensus on the matter, but then I think it would be prudent to remove the section for now until it can be rewritten. 72.138.164.108 (talk) 09:17, 3 October 2008 (UTC) some anonymous editor

Proseline

The "current events" section of the band's history is beginning to look like proseline. This needs a dose of editing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.115.125.36 (talk) 16:22, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

racists

anyone who thinks that 311 is racist is a jackass and should be shot. therefore we should remove that section. no sane person who has ever heard 311's music would ever think that they are racist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.192.12.135 (talk) 20:43, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

-Noting 311's refusion of the KKK myth is probably fine, though I find it superfluous to include a lenghty list of lyrics. Those should be deleted (it's not like transcribing lyrics is equivalent to "proof" of not being racist, anyway). --Skywarp —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.115.125.36 (talk) 19:57, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

311 has answered that concern, the one about them being racist. Check the 311 website Fleurbutterfly 14:23, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Is it pertinent to keep hatespeech and it's response on this page? 96.21.212.127 (talk) 08:32, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Redirection

When you type 311 in the search, it takes you to the year. I think the band would be the most common usage and not the year, and it should be the one the search automatically goes to. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.128.2.9 (talk) 14:49, August 21, 2007 (UTC)

I disagree. Year is usually the first place a number search goes to. The band shouldn't be the automatic result. Besides, the NYC 311 information line is proabably just as well known now to the tens of millions that come through the area each day as this band is to the rest of the nation. I could entertain the possibility of the disambiguation page coming up first, but maybe the best result would be a pair of "For 311(band), click here" at the top of the 311 year page.--Skywarp —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.115.125.36 (talk) 20:12, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Jim Watson departure

Jim Watson didn't leave 311 voluntarily, they asked him to leave because they didn't feel his guitar playing was up to par.

I think somewhere in the 311 Q&A section on their website, P-nut says the hardest thing he had to do was tell Jim he wasn't in the band any longer. Additionally, I thought only Watson was caught skinny dipping, not both Watson and Wills. Badfishstan 20:42, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Badfishstan

Website 311.com Q&A Archive mentions that P-nut and friends went skinny dipping and that Watson got caught. I'm going to make appropriate changes. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.85.36.247 (talk) 03:56, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

311.com Q&A 436 I'm changing it. - 436. Question: What was the hardest task to overcome individually when y'all first came together? (P-Nut) Well, when I was first in the band we had a different guitar player and he was my best friend. And I knew after working together for a little under a year that it wasn't going remain the same, too much butting of heads. So one day, I had to call up Jimi and tell him that he wasn't in the band anymore, one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. 67.85.36.247 (talk) 23:01, 15 March 2008 (UTC) Badfishstan

Scott Stapp fight

One thing a person should remember when they read the article is who 311 got in the fight with: Scott Stapp, who has had fights with other musicians, and has been divorced a couple times also. Also, if Scott insulted the wife as the article states, then even if the security footage "looks" like 311 started it, Scott might have uttered the insult under his breath. Either way, Scott doesn't have the best of reputations and has been known to get violent when intoxicated. I have music from both Creed and 311, and I am a big fan of 311 while I rarely listen to my Creed cds, but I do like them both. I urge everyone to listen to 311's From Chaos album at least once, so that you can determine for yourself. Even if you don't like the music, you have to respect a band smart enough to buy their own recording studio; it shows they like playing, rather than looking at it as a job. And if you go to one of their concerts, you definitely get your money's worth. Scott Stapp has a good voice, but as is noticable in the music from his solo album, his ego gets in the way. Creed had a good grunge sound, but their music is very similar to many bands that are still out there; they only stood out a little with the Christian lyrics (P.O.D. is a good example of better rock with Christian lyrics). Probably until the next fight Scott Stapp gets into, people will forget about him.Jbird713 03:55, 4 May 2006 (UTC)jbird713

Um... Okay?

That entire section sounds like a 12-year-old's diary entry. Fucking rubbish. Deleting it. But you will probably see it return about .001 seconds afterward because of the fucking content Nazi's thinking it is vandalism. This is not democracy.

Misplaced content

Someone posted this on the 311 (date) page, but it is clearly about this band. Does it belong here or is it rightfully discarded?

Original text:

311 was formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska by five self-described "friends for life" (singer/guitarist Nick Hexum, singer S.A. Martinez, guitarist Tim Mahoney, drummer Chad Sexton and the bassist known only as P-Nut), whose common link was a passion for both music and life that eventually brought them together to make music with a positive message behind it. After gigging locally (and by all reports quickly conquering the local music scene there), the quintet moved to Los Angeles, where they signed with Capricorn Records in 1991.
Since that time, 311 have released several albums, including 1992's Music, 1993's Grassroots, and 1995's 311 (aka the "Blue" album), the latter reaching number 12 on the album chart, selling three million copies worldwide, and sporting the tracks "All Mixed Up" and "Down."
In 1996, following a non-stop year of touring, the band released Enlarged to Show Detail, a home video of live performances taken from amphitheater shows in Kansas City and Denver, as well behind-the-scenes looks at life on the road. That the video has been certified platinum in sales is strong testament to the unique relationship the band has with its fans. In 1997, Transistor, a double album of new songs on one CD, was released, and the group mounted its most ambitious tour yet, a worldwide stretch of concerts intended to enlarge the band's already large and loyal fan base. "When we first started the band, we were always sure something good was going to happen," says drummer Chad Sexton, "and we've never gone backwards in any way since." Live followed in 1998, and a year later, 311 returned with Soundsystem. The band jumped to Volcano for From Chaos, which appeared in summer 2001, and followed that with Evolver two years later. By now 311 had been together over ten years, and they celebrated with a Greatest Hits comp. Released in July 2004, it included all of their hit singles, a few new tracks, and the band's gracefully-reggaeing cover of the Cure's "Love Song," originally from the soundtrack to Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's 50 First Dates. 311 came back with new material in August 2005 with the Don't Tread on Me LP. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

Mainstream success

Their mainstream breakthrough obviously started with the Blue Album so I moved the stuff about that album to the proper section. Also, all the info I added regarding their album's gold and platinum status or lack thereof comes from RIAA.com. The info regarding their chart success or lack thereof comes from allmusic.com. Biggest Concert

"On August 26, 2006, 311 hosted their biggest concert ever, at the Hi-Fi Buys Amphitheatre in Atlanta, Georgia with over 18,566 in attendance."

Didn't their concert at Memorial Park in Omaha in 2004 attract an estimated 30,000+? Or are we talking just ticketed events?

On 8/17/06 at PNC Arts Center in NJ it was said to be 311's largest show with over 19,000 people, largest show where they were a headliner, so that may disqualify the Memorial Park show if there were other artists. Badfishstan 16:22, 12 September 2006 (UTC)badfishstan

311 Day 2004

I was there on 311 day 2004. I actually made my way onto the dvd right at the beginning :). But anyway, I spoke with Jim before the concert, long story, but he told me there was a long set list decided, and minutes before they were to go on, they decided to add a few more, making it 72.

The number given on this wiki page says 64, which is probably what someone figured from looking at the DVD of the concert. There were 68 songs and 4 were ommitted due to some error. Set list can be found here http://setlist.com/311/2004/3.11.04.html

So if someone with more experience could change this, and cite with that link, that would be great! 17:24, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

311 borrows lyrics from 77's

I added to the controversy section the fact that a couple of lines belonging to The 77s were repeated in a 311 song, which is a great compliment to the 77s, in my opinion. I've provided citations, so I don't think there would be any disagreements on the addition, but feel free to post here if you disagree. --Abbynormal1 23:35, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

The section I added now says "citation needed", which I'm having trouble understanding. The sources are sited as links to the 311 lyrics and their published date and then the 77s lyrics and their publish date. Conclusions can be drawn from that alone however the issue is also noted in the wiki for the 77s. --Abbynormal1 23:36, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Whoever edited the 311 borrows lyrics from 77's section under controversy that I wrote did a great job clarifying the use of the lyrics. Thanks. --Abbynormal1 05:08, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Alien communication from space? You don't say.

From the Mainstream Breakthrough section:

The track Transistor also has a "hidden" introduction in which an audio file is mixed in that is thought to be alien communications from space.

Gee, you'd think a possible alien communication from space would be worthy of its own article.

"Is thought" by whom? --63.25.106.115 23:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

The mention of the alien communications, is only half correct. The audio that is recorded from space appears at the end of the album, not mixed in with the hidden introduction. Check the WP page for the Transistor album.Badfishstan 20:36, 14 July 2007 (UTC) BadFishStan

I found Image:311 - Greatest Hits 93-03.jpg and noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. Someone will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If it was obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If there are other files on this page, consider checking that they have specified their source and are tagged properly, too. Fair use rationale for Image:311 - Greatest Hits 93-03.jpg

Image:311 - Greatest Hits 93-03.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Best band in the world?

I can't find any confirmation that 311 is the "best band in the world." Can we get some citation here?

AltrEgo2001 20:36, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

questioning Reggae Rock and Reggae Fusion

The last I checked, it is called third-wave ska. I see no elements mentioning the terms reggae rock and fusion and would like to suggest a change in genres.--F-22 Raptor IV 20:26, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

I also see no evidence from outside sites they state 311 as "reggae rock" or "reggae fusion"--F-22 Raptor IV 23:08, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
No sites do not describe them as such however, they do incorporate reggae into their style of rock from time to time making them not only rock artists but reggae fusion acts as well because they perform a mixture of genres which includes reggae.--Sixpacz (talk) 22:28, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Overview of the meaning of '311'

Although it is listed in several places on the internet that the name 311 originates from the indecent exposure citation from Omaha[1], this does not appear to be true. 311 was the indecent exposure penal code in California [2] however the current California code is 314 [3] [4]. The Omaha, or more correctly Nebraska code is 806 [5] although it looks like the radio reference is, or was 829. [6] Anyway, it appears to be a reference to the earlier (from 1872?) California law if anything. Gampgamp (talk) 04:36, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

If anything, that section is too long and poorly written. Quotes are not used, it's a bit confusing, and so on... --RockyMM (talk) 10:29, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
I'll try to research the meaning of 311 (if there's a meaning). I understand, by reading through the article, there could be a lot of false information that I have tagged the need to cite. I also understand that there is a serious lack of sources.--F-22 Raptor IV 14:57, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Genres in infobox an unnecessary clutter?

I suggest we just leave the Alternative Rock and Reggae genres in the infobox, since genres in infoboxes technically aim for generality seen here. While doing so, we should create a seperate "Musicial Style" section in the article to mention the numerous genres that 311 is classified as.--F-22 RaptörAces High 02:44, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

I agree - and we can probably get rid of the references in that particular section. Most other bands do not have references for their genre listing, as it is unlikely to be contested.
I don't really see the problem. There was only 5 genres in there. If there was like 10 or something, I would understand. I really think the 5 genres were all fine in the infobox, where they were. 66.227.133.112 (talk) 12:10, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Reggae

Sure 311 has elements of reggae in several songs, but they should not be listed as just 'altenative rock' and 'reggae' in the info box. Anyone who listens to the band knows that they have a wide variety of musical sounds, and are mainly just a rock band that incorporates several different elements into their music, hence the musical style section

ON HDTV?

In the 311 day segment, it talks about one of the concerts being released ON HDTV...as if HDTV is a channel. Was it aired on an HD channel? OR just as an HD concert? This part definitely needs some cleaning up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.67.106.1 (talk) 08:51, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

Album in 2013?

Is there any update to the "2012-Present" events section stating an album is forthcoming in 2013? The articles referenced are from mid-2012. Without mention, promotion, or details this late in the year, I find it unlikely it's happening (unless it's a "surprise" album like Radiohead's "In Rainbows"). Anyone see any statements from the band that would allow us to remove the 2013 release sentence from the History section? 75.99.101.86 (talk) 20:42, 9 July 2013 (UTC)S.

Okay I thought I posted this before, I don't know if someone deleted it, by why does each band member not have their own Wiki page!?!?!?! Are you serious? Do you know how huge these guys are and only Nick has one? Is this just because no one has written one, or because someone feels each band member doesn't warrant their own page?
