To clarify: [TEXT] in quotes does *not* mean that "TEXT" wasn't pronounced. It just means that the quote was alterred from the literal original -- in this case, a capital H was changed to a small h and the sentence's position was grammatically changed, even though you wouldn't notice it without knowing the original sentence. It's not something I'm willing to revert over, though, if for some reason you don't like it. —Nightstallion (?) 10:52, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Let's see what some others say. If others want to have the brackets, fine. But it doesn't look correct to me, and I cannot imagine any authoritative publication doing that. But we'll see what others working on this whole coup thing have to say. David Cannon 13:49, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
shrugs As I said, it's not really terribly important. Where I live and work, it's mandatory to cite *only* verbatim, and if you even so much as change the capitalisation due to picking a sentence fragment out of some text, you have to clearly indicate that it's not *exactly* the original text, much as you would write "[...]" to indicate you left out some part of the text. But since you seem to be strongly against it, I'll let it be as it currently is, i.e. without brackets. —Nightstallion (?) 14:23, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Where I live, it's also mandatory to include brackets for any modification to a quote, including changing a capital letter to a small letter, or the reverse. I'm currently writing my doctoral thesis, and it's rather annoying to have to put those brackets all over the place, so I should know. ;) Aridd (talk) 10:03, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2009 election?[edit]

since the government of Fiji is being cagey about elections, can we reverse the redirect so this goes to Next Fijian general election and not so NFGE comes here? It doesn't look like there's going to be an election in 2009. plan 8 (talk) 23:12, 19 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Both Iloilo and Bainimarama have now said the plan is to have elections in (or by) September 2014. It's a fairly clear statement, so I think the current title is appropriate. If the schedule changes, we can move the article again. Aridd (talk) 11:55, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
cool. I just didn't think the chances of a 2009 election were high, and I thought it better to change the title to reflect that. but, since that happened anyway, I am happy. cheers. plan 8 (talk) 03:46, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2013 Constitution[edit]

The last sentence in the lead section says:

The elections were to be held under the new constitution which gave fairer rights to native Fijians, lowered the voting age to 18 and gave the right of multiple citizenship to Fijians for the first time.

I'm not sure what that's meant to refer to. (Particularly as it's unsourced.) In no sense were indigenous Fijians deprived of "fair rights" prior to this Constitution. On the contrary, it's the Indo-Fijian minority which, from the late 80s to the mid-2000s (and arguably even before that) was subject to suspicion, discriminatory measures, and (very occasionally) racial violence. The stated reason for the 2006 coup was to remove an indigenous supremacist government, and put an end to racial politics and discrimination. I'm consequently removing that part of the sentence. Aridd (talk) 19:25, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for that observation, Aridd. I've spent enough time in Fiji since the 70's to be able to confirm your point. As I recall it, indigenous Fijians were privy to higher paid jobs in the tourist industry (the mainstay of the Fijian economy), while the Indian population were relegated to the kitchens of hotels, driving taxis, and all other undesirable jobs. Unsourced and WP:POV from the sounds of things. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 06:01, 22 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Vote totals don't add up[edit]

The figures given by Election Fiji for invalid votes don't seem to add up. According to FBC, the Election Supervisor says that there were 3,714 invalid votes out of the 496,394 votes cast. However, the 496,394 figure is the total of the valid votes for parties. The invalid votes must be on top of this figure. If this is the case, the number of votes cast is actually 500,078, which means turnout was actually 84.60% (not 83.97%).

Have Elections Fiji just messed up basic mathematics, or am I missing something? Number 57 10:15, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
