Page Title

I think this page should be named "2010 Youth Summer Olympics" to mesh better with the other Games. (This is the only page that doesn't list the season, and that includes "Games"). I'm not sure how to do that, and what type of a domino effect would it have? Your thoughts? --Cbradshaw (talk) 18:09, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I moved title to "2010 Youth Summer Olympics" since there was no response. Cheers--Cbradshaw (talk) 21:46, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

CBD Image

I readded the image, as a picture of Singapore is very relevant on this page. When we are closer to the Games, or if some Singapore Wikipedians are able, it would be great to add pictures of the event/city. But for now, I think this is good. Cheers--Cbradshaw (talk) 04:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Qualifying

Shouldnt there be something on how you qualify —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.169.16.181 (talk) 19:34, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

The international federations are left with this responsibility. They are supposed to hold qualification events in 2009 and maybe even as late as 2010. Apart from the quota places that are gained via qualification events and subseqent NOC decision, there are a few host country places, and a larger number of universality places, the amount of which differs from sport to sport. Games of the I Youth Olympiad

There is no such thing as "Games of the I Youth Olympiad ". Please provide a reference other wise this is original research. Hektor (talk) 07:08, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

The modern Olympic cycle starts with the Athens Games in 1896. We are now in the XXIX Olympiad. The YOG of 2010 and 2012 will take place during this XXIX Olympiad. Hektor (talk) 10:29, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
But the recent Winter Olympics was the "XXI Olympic Winter Games", where the current Paralympics are "X Paralympic Winter Games". I would agree that "I" is logical. -- Zanimum (talk) 13:27, 20 March 2010 (UTC)

High-quality pictograms here... [1] It seems that some logos are different than the ones on the official Singapore 2010 Summer Youth Olympics site, such as the one for Aquatics. --Fpmfpm (talk) 01:21, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi, just to point out that the ones at the YOG site should be the updated ones. The WhyOhGee site is just a microsite for youths set up by SYOGOC for the YOG. Chunchuan (talk) 13:01, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Where does this list come from? Not only the list seems particulary short, but if it was listing only confirmed countries doesn't seem to provide the source. The official site mentions "205 Olympics committees" http://www.singapore2010.sg/public/sg2010/en/en_about_us/en_youth_olympics_games.html

Inaccuracy

I want to point out that the dates for certain events in the event calendar are inaccurate.

For example badminton(the event that I have volunteered for) should start on 15 August.

I'm not sure if this is the correct way to give feedback. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Genixp (talkcontribs) 13:31, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Answered on on Genixp's talk page. Yes, thank you. I'll follow up on this error shortly. Trafford09 (talk) 07:40, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
I've for now only added the 3 tags at top of article, to alert the page-watching editors.
I don't know where the latest event schedules can found, so I'll leave it to those in the know.
Please delete the 3 flags (& [citation needed] on badminton) when revised schedules are found & used to replace those in the article.
Thanks, Trafford09 (talk) 16:12, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
I see from this edit that an editor has removed the {{cn}} for badminton,

Accounting for Mixed NOC sports medals

Discussion
As mentioned in the article, Mixed NOC participation is a unique feature of the YOG. For five (5) sports: fencing, judo, modern pentathlon, and triathlon, there are medals awarded for teams of athletes from different nations.

In the absence of any 'official' medal tables, how should this be represented on the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics medal table? Should this be omitted from the NOC Medal table and created in a different medal table? i.e. Medals are accounted for: Europe, Asia Pacific, Americas, etc... Taking one example from Fencing, there were 6 competitors: 5 from Italy, 1 from Russia that won Gold. Technically, only one Gold medal was issued; however, the accounting of this medal can be interpreted in several inconsistent ways. GreenB.live (talk) 06:02, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Are there any official publications by the SYOGOC or IOC on attribution for mixed NOC events? If there are, can you show them to us? I think the organisers probably would have mentioned a thing or two about this. ANGCHENRUI Talk 09:06, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
If the participation is inter-continent, say Europe vs Oceania for example, I suppose it is possible to name the winning team under "Europe" or "Oceania" respectively -i.e. the name of the continents. An alternate solution would be to just use the Olympic flag together with its name. You can specify as a footnote or in a separate location the countries that helped to garner the medal. ANGCHENRUI Talk 09:09, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
they are using Olympic flag and Olympic anthem fot these events, I think these medals must be ignored or it's better to put them in a separate table. also not only 5 sports, Tennis and Archery has mixed events. --Mohsen1248 (talk) 10:12, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I think each NOC should be given 0.5 medal regardless of the actual number of athletes or NOCs in a team. --阿pp (talk) 11:02, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I agree with ANGCHENRUI and Mohsen1248. Don't include these medals under the individual nations in the table. List under the Olympic flag in the table, and put in an appropriate footnote. David Biddulph (talk) 11:09, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
The situation is exactly the same as early olympics, now I think it's better to use Mixed team in the medal table. for all these medals under olympic flag. --Mohsen1248 (talk) 13:54, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
So, is someone going to sort out the medal table soon? — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:35, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
That was done 20:25 yesterday evening. [Briefly wrong again early this morning but soon reverted.] David Biddulph (talk) 12:24, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
This is just stupid. Now it looks like the Mixed Team actually is a team, just like Luxembourg or Liechtenstein. But they aren't. Look how stupid it is: they currently have 4 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals. Ofcourse, they can't loose, they win all the medals in team events... It looks like they're a great team, but it isn't a team! You can't compare it with the 1896 Olympics, because there athletes competed against each other, no nations. Here, nations compete, but in some events, they're mixed: the mixed events. That doesn't mean they aren't Russian or Canadian or whatever? 91.176.223.106 (talk) 13:44, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I propose that this discussion be continued at Talk:2010 Summer Youth Olympics medal table, where a similar discussion is ongoing. If there is no disagreement...

Concerns and controversies?

As with other Olympic Games, concerns and controversies over the 2010 Youth Olympics should be included if they exist. I'm jotting what I've heard so far:

  1. That the Singaporean government has been accused by citizens of over-promoting the games in the country - excessive usage of posters
  2. Idea of a YOG itself is questionable - teens are already participating in the senior Olympics

If you've heard of any, please do discuss here. Let's have a better coverage of the Games for this article. Best, ANGCHENRUI Talk 10:20, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

I totally agree . If there are controversies, then they should be mentioned from a neutral point of view. For instance, the wiki page for the 2008 Summer Olympics also includes a section for controversies and concerns. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Summer_Olympics#Concerns_and_controversies)
Regarding the 2nd point about the necessity of the YOG, that point should belong to the main YOG article rather than specifically the 2010 YOG article Zhanzhao (talk) 07:34, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
The Temasek Review (http://www.temasekreview.com/category/yog/) provides a lot of YOG articles from another point of view. There are a number popular controversial topics. One, complaints by Polytechnic students on the inconvenience caused by providing accommodation the YOG people in their campus. Then, the fact that local students are being forced to "volunteer" for the games. Volunteering might involve helping out at the games, but can simply involve cheering for the torch relay, or showing up at games as enthusiastic spectators. Then, those "volunteers" are given meals that had been compared to dog food, while YOG officials and athletes are provided with a three-meal buffet everyday. There have also been reports that most tickets were in fact purchased by the Singapore government, and not bought by individuals. And that is just to name a few possible controversies.
I think that there should be a section on the page dedicated to controversies. If that is agreeable, then validation of the information will be needed. Please discuss. Icy-snowflake (talk) 11:14, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Yes, if there is enough information to write about, a section is highly desirable. In fact, most of the other Olympic Games articles have a separate article on "Concerns and controversies of the XXX Olympics". Of course, the most important thing here is NPOV, I do agree. We will be doing a huge disservice to everyone if we provide false statements. Regards, ANGCHENRUI Talk 13:36, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

May wish to refer to the second last paragraph of this article: "Critics have derided the newly created event as little more than a summer camp and it has come under fire for a lack of support from local Singaporeans." And maybe this, about "subdued fan enthusiasm". Just for your consideration. ANGCHENRUI Talk 15:25, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
I would hold off using the Temasek Review as a RS. Their content differs from typical acceptable news sources used as RS in that unlike other news sites, they do not identify the writer of the articles (hence removing accountability), plus their articles are written in an NPOV style, rather than just writing in a straightforward and unbiased news writing style. Google itself identifies it as a blog (when searched under its "news" tab). If the content being reported by Temasek Review is valid, there should be other mentions of it in other publications/sites (considering that the foreign media are in Singapore to cover the event as well) which do pass Wikipedia's NPOV and RS test.Zhanzhao (talk) 07:34, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Food poisoning

http://sg.yfittopostblog.com/2010/08/18/nea-moh-probe-food-poisoning-at-yog/ There was a case of food poisoning to the YOG volunteers on 15 August. And in the earlier week, there was an online uproar over the quality of meals served to volunteers. Just some information. ANGCHENRUI Talk 09:42, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Seems pretty marginal to me. — Cheers, JackLee talk 10:34, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Small section? Can add the previous case of small food portion to form a "food issue"? Xaiver0510 (talk) 01:30, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Both of the incidents still seem very trivial to me, unless there is more in the media about them. — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:34, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Source is a blog though. Please use a RS that is acceptable under wiki policies. Should be some report of this in other media.Zhanzhao (talk) 07:34, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Just to note for the source given, footnote is 'Coverage of Singapore’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games is brought to you by students from Republic Polytechnic’s Diploma in Communication and Information Design (DCID), in conjunction with Yahoo! South-east Asia.' The article is similar to what you can expect of the papers in Singapore and since it is conjunction with yahoo, the source should be acceptable. Just my thoughts. Xaiver0510 (talk) 01:47, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
If that is the case, it'd be better if the original Yahoo news source is used instead. It should be stated on the yahoo news article on Yahoo somewhere since the footnote says it as such. I'm trying to avoid a case of a Republic Poly student posting a comment to a YOG article on Yahoo (I've seen editors attempt to use comments to articles as RS), which makes the source unacceptable, even though technically it is on yahoo. Zhanzhao (talk) 03:28, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Attendance

Okay, I have jumped the gun on the school's attendance for YOG event but feel free to edit or remove if not notable enough. Also, acceptable to add the poor attendance but sold out tickets for some events? Well, if its notable enough, why not! ANGCHENRUI Talk 09:04, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
I noted the same thing as you but I think we can wait till the YOG is over first to see how the article fleshed out or unless we do have so much Concerns and controversies that we need to branch out immediately Xaiver0510 (talk) 01:55, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Sports Gender identifier - why Boy/Girl instead of Youth Men's and Youth Women's

The YOG 2010 sports result pages have adopted a format of calling the Male participants "Boys" and Female participants "Girls". In doing so, they have made a very bad grammatical use of apostrophes as well. In some countries, the use of "Boys" and "Girls" for teenagers/adolescents can be viewed as both derogatory and negative.

The official site uses the identifier of "Youth Men's" and "Youth Women's". For the medalist table, I have used the generic "Men's" and "Women's" in the absence of any guidance or consensus for Youth sports.

As I am a new editor, could I have some advice/opinion on how I should proceed in editing when I see the use of "Boys" and "Girls"? GreenB.live (talk) 02:04, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

We should adopt the terminology used by the official YOG website. — Cheers, JackLee talk 06:15, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
If the official organisation uses a certain set of terminology, then we would do well to follow them provided there are no issues (encyclopedic or otherwise) with it. In this case, it's "Youth Men's" and "Youth Women's"? I see no issue with it, so I guess it's good :) ANGCHENRUI Talk 10:12, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
[Edit conflict] Unfortunately, it appears there is no consistency of usage among sports. Thus, the terms boys and girls are used for basketball, but men and women for gymnastics. I don't know whether this is simply due to an oversight on the part of the SYOGOC, or whether the terminology varies depending on the sport. — Cheers, JackLee talk 06:15, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
I have quickly extracted the title/identifiers used by each respective sport from the sports schedule on the official site. As mentioned, it is 'all over the shop'; each sport has it's unique classification. I have never heard people use Mens' or Womens', so can't quite understand why some people think the use of Boys' and Girls' is okay. It's just plain wrong English. Bearing in mind, people are already creating pages with Boys'/Girls' and category boxes that are "Boys" and "Girls" despite the 'schedule' saying it's "Youth Men's" or "Men's", should we change this and use what the official schedule says or not? Either way, I have no issue updating the pages to reflect what is meant to be on wiki, I just don't want people editing pages back and forth according to the way they think it should be... I don't understand your thoughts on the correctness of the English for Boys' and Girls'. Belonging to boys would be boys'; belonging to girls would be girls'. What's wrong with that? But I agree that we should go with the terminology on the official site. David Biddulph (talk) 11:32, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

I think we all generally agree that the best way to avoid disputes is to go with the terminology used by the official website, even though the usage varies according to the sport. GreenB.live, like David I'm not sure why you think Boys' and Girls' is incorrect. These are simply the possessive forms of Boys and Girls. Thus, it is grammatically correct to write the girls' team (meaning "the team belonging to the girls") and the women's competition. The apostrophe appears after the S in girls because the plural form of girl is girls which already ends with an S, and it is not conventional to write girls's. On the other hand, the plural of woman is women which does not end with an S, so it is conventional to write the possessive form as women's. — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:48, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
You are right, it is the possessive form. Men's Basketball if equivalent would be Boys' Basketball... In my region of the world, it has become generally accepted that the apostrophe be omitted in most cases of this occurrence. Apologies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by GreenB.live (talkcontribs) 11:54, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Consistency = same gender identifiers throughout all the sports? Or using the official terms by sport. I'm also asking - has it already been applied? ANGCHENRUI Talk 11:49, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
I meant that we should stick to the gender identifiers set out in the above table consistently across all 2010 Summer Youth Olympics articles. There seems to be a specific reason why different terminology has been adopted for different sports. I have no idea whether the various articles have been using this terminology. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:57, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

I'm not convinced it's necessary, given how few of the medal winners actually have Wikipedia articles at the moment. Strange Passerby (talk) 05:15, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
It's not absolutely necessary yep. Good to have though. Admittedly, not many of the medallists have their own articles, still the article will serve as a good listing of these people. I'm not overly concerned about this though. ANGCHENRUI Talk 14:20, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

If you are talking about medals won by members of mixed-NOC teams, they don't count for each individual nation.
