S M kayum (Bengali: এস এম কাইয়ুম; born October 16, 1991 in Khulna) is a Bangladeshi filmmaker, screenwriter and poet.[1][2][3] His work addresses such themes as deception-hypocrisy, urban youth romance, middle class angst, and frailty of individual. He has been a director and screenwriter since 2017.

Early life[edit]

Kayum was born October 16, 1991 in Bagerhat District, a district in south-western Bangladesh. He is the oldest of three children. He grew up in the natural environment of Dighlia, surrounded by rivers Bhairab and Atrai. His kindergarten days began at the Star Jute Mills High School. He studied there till class 7 and then moved to the C.S. Pilot Model Secondary School, Kachua, Bagerhat. He completed his postgraduation in Sociology from Khulna University.[4]

Career[edit]

S M Kayum made his debut as a filmmaker in 2017.[1] He was the assistant director in the film Komola Rocket. Starring Mosharraf Karim, Tauquir Ahmed, Samia Said in the lead roles. The film is the third film from Bangladesh which saw its release on Netflix.[5] and The film won Best Debut Film at the 4th Jaffna International Cinema Festival in Sri Lanka, Jury Prize at the Festival du Film d'Asie du Sud in France.[6] In 2019, SM Kayum started making TV Drama. His first drama was Brishti Chinhito Valobasha (2019), on aired on Maasranga Television.[1] Since then, he has made a number of TV Drama and Telefilm including Moner Bari (2021),[3] Bibi Bivranti (2023), Vaggofal (2024), were aired on NTV and other channels.[7]

Kayum was greatly influenced by the movie of Roy Andersson, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Akira Kurosawa who had heralded a new era in movie through their works.

Cinematic style[edit]

Kayum feels comfortable in bringing out the stories of familiar people around him in a different way.[8] He known for his distinctive style of absurdist humor and melancholic depictions of human life. His films often feature long takes, static shots, and surreal imagery to convey a sense of existential alienation.

Filmography[edit]

S M Kayum's debut film as a filmmaker was Antorborti (in post-production).[9][10][11] Starring Ahmed Rubel,[12][13] Amirul Haque Chowdhury, Rahmat Ali, Abu Hurayra Tanvir,[14] Neelanjona Neela,[15][16] Naresh Bhuiyan, Fariha Shams Sheuti. Masum Aziz was signed to the film, but died on 17 October 2022.[17][18]

Literary work[edit]

SM Kayum is involved in drama and film direction as well as creative writing. He mainly writes poetry. His poems are regularly published in the country's national dailies, such as Daily Sangbad, The Daily Ittefaq, follow-upnews,[23] Shampratik Deshkal,[24] and Bharat Bichitra, which is published by the High Commission of India, Bangladesh.[25] Since 2016, he has been editing a literary magazine named Noi(ণই)
