(REMOVED OLD LIST OF FEATURED/GOOD ARTICLES - PLEASE UPDATE THE LIST AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE)

Thanks for the update Steve. Well, actually we have three good articles. Chevrolet Corvette has also reached that status recently. If the Corvette article is better than any of the present seven selected articles, than we should change it. What do you think? Does any of the seven selected articles need to be replaced? --Boivie 07:20, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd hate to have to pick between them. They are all plenty good enough. Why not have an 8 day update cycle instead of 7? That has some positive advantages. Currently, people who check Wikipedia on the weekend only ever see one or two car articles out of the seven good ones. If we had an 8 day update cycle then they'd see a different car every Saturday for 7 weeks before the cycle repeated. This also has the advantage that nobody has to decide which is the worst of the good and featured articles in order to 'vote it off the island'. As more car articles make it up there, we can continually increase the length of the update cycle and gradually decrease the chance of some visitor seeing the same one twice. SteveBaker 16:17, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh - OK - I see why you chose a 7 day cycle - it's so you can use CURRENTDAYNAME to automatically cycle them. Hmmm - what about using CURRENTDAY instead - which would give you a monthly cycle of between 28 and 31 articles and just repeat a bunch of them so the 1st through 8th shows each article once, then 9th through 16th cycles them again, 17th through 24th again - then for the last few days you'd have to have a shorter set. So some articles would get slightly more air-time than others - but as more articles make the cut, that effect would get less and less. SteveBaker 16:35, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, interesting. Maybe it's not a bad idea. By only letting the seven best articles be selected, it will be more exclusive to become a Portal:Cars selected article. But I agree that all eight are really good articles. --Boivie 22:43, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BMW MINI just made it to 'Good Article' status today - maybe you'd like to add it into the Portal:cars rotation cycle. I'm putting it up for peer review next. That gets us up to 5 FA's and 6 GA's! SteveBaker 22:27, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Followup: BMW MINI passed Peer Review - and now it's in WP:FAC but I don't think it's going to make FA without help. SteveBaker 03:00, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest Buick Reatta as a selected article. --SFoskett 01:14, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Although Buick Reatta seems like a decent article, it is much shorter than the featured and good articles listed below. --Boivie 06:51, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think you should put Buick Reatta up for 'Good Article' - and if it passed, go for 'Peer Review' - after that, it should be considered for a future Portal:Cars feature.

Now I've replaced two of the articles according to this logic:

  1. first of all, the featured articles should be included. (De Lorean, Mustang, 450SEL, Mini and VW Type 2)
  2. That leaves two days for good articles
  3. I'm ignoring the good articles about car brands
  4. We already have a Mini article, and an article about a car made by Ford, but we don't have any article about a Japanese car or about a car made by GM.
  5. So the two last spots goes to Lexus LS and Corvette.

--Boivie 21:54, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay now I understand your reasoning behind replacing the Town Car with the Vette, but according to that logic we would also have to add a Korean, Swedish and Frenach vehicle to the selected articles. Which for that matter would not be a bad idea ;-). I am, however, of the opinion that there should not be a limit the number selected articles to 7 (one for each of the day of the week). There is no limit for how many articles can be made featured articles, it is a decision made purely on the quality of the article. In the near future there might also very well be more than 7 FA car articles, as more and more get nominated. Maybe the articles could be displayed on a two week basis, with 14 artilcles featured in two weeks. As more and more articles join the rank of being FAs and GAs, the rotation could be expanded. Afterall exlusivity of quality is not really one of Wikipedia's values. Thank you. Best Regards, Signaturebrendel 04:38, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The reason we have only 7 articles is to do with the mechanism that cycles the articles automatically using the date macro as a part of the link/redirect name. There are several problems with this:
  1. You can only have 7 featured articles.
  2. Someone who only reads Wikipedia at the weekend will miss all but two of the articles.
This sucks. However, the mechanism that's being used could accomodate a different article for every date within the month - so we could have up to 31 different articles (although the last one would only come up on months with 31 days). If we have less than 31 then we can feature the best ones more than once a month. That would get eliminate both of the problems mentioned above. I think it's wrong to exclude or include articles on such nebulous basis as the nationality (especially since so many cars are hard to pin down - is the MINI (BMW) British or German?)...I think that ALL 'Featured Articles' should unconditionally make the Portal no matter what. If we are going to put 'Good Articles' up there (and I'm not sure we should) then to be fair, we must put them ALL up there - again, no favoritism or bias. There is an argument to be made that ex-'Featured Articles' should still be left up there because they are still pretty darned good compared to a typical "Good Article". Please[edit]

Is it ok if I put the article HSV Senator Signature on the front page of the cars portal it has not been on yet, tell me the answer at my talk page. Senators 05:44, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NO! It is not OK. HSV Senator Signature has not reached WP:GA status yet. Please follow this portal's guidelines. SteveBaker 14:19, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Over the past few months myself and several other contributors have been working on this article - and I believe that we have got it up to a high standard. If it is O.K. would someone please make this a featured portal cars article. Regards OSX 00:22, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The rule is that to be featured on the portal, you have to have either "Good Article" or "Featured Article" status - so check out WP:GA - follow the process and if you pass, it's easy to add your article to the portal's regular update cycle. It's a "reward" of sorts for jumping through the hoops necessary to get formal acceptance and review of your article. SteveBaker

This article is a GA now and I have added it further up this page, however I am uncertain of how to add it to the circulation (the page for which this is the discussion). I will write a summary for it in my user space. You can see it at User:James086/MC12summary. James086Talk | Contribs 06:35, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Abuse of this page[edit]

Please do not add your car article to this list unless it has actually passed (with a "YES!") either the WP:GA or WP:FA process. The 'featured article' on Portal:Cars must maintain at least a minimal standard of quality.
