Mai Sakurajima (桜島 麻衣, Sakurajima Mai) is a character from the Japanese light novel and anime series Rascal Does Not Dream. She is the focal female character of the first light novel Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Mai is a young actress who takes a hiatus after pressures from her acting carrier and abuse from her mother, who is acting as her manager, becomes too much. While on hiatus, she realizes people no longer recognize her.
Character and reception[edit]
A notable model and actress, she is an attractive third-year high school girl. She's very kind-hearted, nice, serious, and polite with a tendency to freak out around Sakuta given his lewd remarks. She's also sensitive about what others think of her, and anxious about the possibility of being forgotten, though Sakuta helps her overcome it.[2] She is pure-hearted, with a playful and funny side to her personality,[3] and is also confident and strong-willed.[4] Like Sakuta and Shoko, she's also a very selfless and loving person, which is notable as she's the one who sacrifices her life in the movie.[5]
Her approachable personality has been appreciated and compared to more abrasive light novel heroines such as Yukino Yukinoshita.[6] CBR.com ranks Mai #28 among "the best anime waifu of all time".[7] Since the release of the work, Mai has always been a popular and well-liked character on sites such as MyAnimeList.[8]
