James Dring (born 1983) is a British music producer, mixer and songwriter. His work has been nominated for two Grammy awards and a Golden Globe award.[1][2][3][4]

Career[edit]

Dring was educated at the De Aston School in Market Rasen.[5] He started his career as an assistant to producer Cameron McVey.[citation needed] Dring, who is a cousin of musician Damon Albarn, was credited as co-writer on the Blur album Think Tank released in 2003. This was the first Blur album to feature songwriting credits outside of the band itself.[6][7]

Dring has worked with various artists, including Gorillaz, Jamie T, Loyle Carner, Beyoncé, Nilufer Yanya, Lana Del Rey, Sorry (band), KennyHoopla, Genesis Owusu, Honeyblood, and Self Esteem.[1][8][9]

Dring's work on the Gorillaz track "Feel Good Inc." was credited in the award nomination for the "Record of the Year" category at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards.[4] The 2008 documentary "Bananaz" highlighted Dring's role in producing Gorillaz's albums Demon Days (2005) and D-Sides (2007), shedding light on his contributions during the recording of the song "Rockit".[1] In 2009 he received both Grammy and Golden Globe award nominations for his contribution to the Beyoncé song "Once In a Lifetime", featured in the film Cadillac Records, along with Amanda Ghost, Scott McFarnon, Ian Dench, and Jody Street.[2][3][10]

Dring has worked with Jamie Treays, more commonly known as Jamie T, on several studio albums, including Panic Prevention (2007), Kings And Queens (2009), Carry On The Grudge (2014), and Trick (2016).[1][8][11][12] On the production of the Trick album Treays stated he came up with the initial songs and then a robust collaboration with Dring occured to realise the final song production. In particular Treays highlighted Dring's skill with drumming, citing his work on Demon Days as "fucking amazing".[13]

Dring served as the producer for 925 (2020), the debut album by Sorry.[14][15] He has also contributed to their follow up album Anywhere but Here.[citation needed] In 2022, Bucks Music Group announced the signing of Dring to a worldwide songwriting agreement.[1][8] In 2024 he was the producer for the debut EP, "Head Leaking", by the London based quartet Terra Twin.[16] Dring has been described in the music press as a "revered producer".[17]
