Herlitz is a German-Slavic surname: a variant spelling in the fusion of the Germanic terms Herr (Lord, Master) and Litz, variant of Lietz: toponymic name for several places of Slavic origin in eastern Germany, and probably a short form of Lausitz, 'territory of swampy meadows'. Its origin possibly dates back to the Lusatian Culture registered in the Nordic Bronze Age. The Herlitz could have been Christianized during the medieval period, adopting the phonetic style of Latin (romanization), which is why the surname was transcripted in official documents, at the beginning of the modern age, as Herlicii or Herlicivs (both in academic and artistic circles in Germany and Sweden)
