English: The couple seems to be studying a newly-bought work of art, since there is no hanging device on its reverse side. The new painting is probably intended to replace one of the two paintings that have been removed, leaving distinct marks on the wall. The objects adorning the room reveal the couple as avid collectors and, unlike the norm at the time, the husband and wife are presented as connoisseurs on an equal footing.
