William Jackson "Bill" Thorn (born September 4, 1930) is an American football, cross country, and track coach and a member of the Georgia Athletic Coaches (GACA) Hall of Fame.[1]
Thorn is also the only runner to have consecutively completed the first 53 Peachtree Road Races, starting with the race's inception in 1970 through 2023.[2][3][4]
Coaching Career[edit]
Thorn coached Georgia High School athletics for over 50 years, including stints at the Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward Academy), Headland High School, Fayette Christian School, and Landmark Christian School.[5] Thorn retired from active coaching in 2019, at the age of 89. At the time of his retirement, he had been awarded "Coach of the Year" over 125 times. [6]
Thorn was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches (GACA) Hall of Fame in 2020 after winning a collective 38 Georgia state titles in Track & Field, believed to be the most by any Georgia High School coach in history. [7][8]
