Core-Lokt

Remington Core-Lokt is a popular hunting bullet and line of factory loaded ammunition manufactured by Remington Arms Company, LLC. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_Arms The first commercially successful controlled expansion bullet made for hunting big game animals, Core-Lokt is known for its reliable terminal performance and effectiveness. History

With the adoption of smokeless gunpowder in the early 1900s, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpowder the velocities of commonly used military and hunting cartridges were increasing. As traditionally manufactured cup-and-core lead bullets were pushed to higher terminal velocities, results on game became less predictable. Bullets either failed to penetrate, or overexpanded, with the bullet’s jacket separating from the bullet’s lead core. Introduced in 1939, Core-Lokt differed from other hunting projectiles of the time by the bullet’s construction. The bullet was among the first bullets to be engineered to keep jacket and core together, providing controlled, reliable expansion upon impact. By retaining a high percentage of its original weight, the bullets ensured maximum energy transfer and deep penetration. Core-Lokt bullets quickly gained popularity among hunters due to its reliable performance. (CITE https://sportsafield.com/2021/a-short-history-of-big-game-bullets/) Remington has advertised Core-Lokt with the tagline “The Deadliest Mushroom in the Woods” since the late 1960s, showcasing the bullet’s characteristic expanded profile.

Design, Construction, Manufacture

Core-Lokt incorporates a lead alloy bullet core that is mechanically locked to a copper jacket, hence the name "Core-Lokt." The lead core is exposed at the bullet's tip, above a thin metal jacket. The rear of the bullet is enclosed by a heavier copper jacket. The jacket tapers towards the nose of the bullet, becoming thinner and aiding in expansion on target. The bullet's design promotes controlled expansion upon impact while maintaining its weight for deep penetration.

The bullet's exposed lead tip initiates expansion upon contact with the target, causing the bullet to mushroom and create a larger wound channel. The jacket, with its locking mechanism, ensures that the lead core remains intact even during high-velocity impacts, preventing separation and maximizing weight retention.

Remington Core-Lokt Ammo is available in a wide range of calibers, accommodating different firearms and hunting requirements. The ammunition is offered in various bullet styles, including soft point, pointed soft point, and bonded bullets.

Originally produced in Bridgeport, CT, Core-Lokt has been manufactured since the early 1970’s in Remington’s Lonoke, AR ammunition plant. In 2002, Remington began producing a bonded version of Core-Lokt, Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded. In 2021, Remington introduced Core-Lokt Tipped. A modern style of Core-Lokt bullet, the non-bonded or cup and core bullet utilizes a polymer tip and boat-tail for increased accuracy and better ballistic performance at longer ranges.
