Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan is an Indian computer scientist, researcher, and academician. He holds a professorial position at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB)[1], where he has produced important advances in the domains of machine learning, natural language processing, and knowledge representation[2].

Childhood and Education[edit]

Born in India of 1978, Ganesh Ramakrishnan enrolled at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB). He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering in 2000. He continued his studies at IITB and earned his Ph.D. in computer science there in 2005.

Career[edit]

Prof. Ramakrishnan completed his B.Tech. from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay. Further, he joined PhD in the same department and graduated.

After completing his Ph.D., Prof. Ramakrishnan joined as Research Staff Member at IBM India Research Labs, New Delhi, India. Later, he joined as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2014 and Full Professor in 2018.[3]

Throughout his career, Prof. Ramakrishnan has been actively involved in research, teaching, and mentoring[4]. His research interests encompass a wide range of areas, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and knowledge representation. He has published numerous research papers in reputed international journals and conference proceedings and has received several awards for his research contributions.

Project Udaan[edit]

Project Udaan is an IIT Bombay initiative to enable translation of textbooks and other learning materials written in English to Hindi and all other Indian languages. It is a donation-based project aimed at translating scientific and technical content. Prof. Ramakrishnan and his team have created this AI-enabled ecosystem to ensure translation of engineering learning materials to various vernacular languages.[5] Recognizing their work, Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) signed an MoU with IIT Bombay in July 2023.[6]

Bharat GPT[edit]

In December 2023, Prof Ramakrishnan became involved in a partnership with Reliance Jio to utilize the capabilities of generative pre-trained transformers to develop AI solutions addressing key business verticals like telecom and retail under Reliance[7]. The announcement was made by the Chairman of Reliance, Akash Ambani at IIT Bombay's annual tech-fest. Bharat GPT would be a public-private partnership initiative led by IIT Bombay with Reliance.[8]
