Greyhaven was an American progressive rock and metal band from Eugene, Oregon that were active from 1996 to 2000.

History[edit]

Greyhaven formed in 1996 in Eugene, Oregon. Originally composed of guitarist and keyboardist Ethan Matthews, guitarist Nate Howard, and drummer Nicolas Cipriano, the group recorded an initial instrumental EP in 1997. This recording became known in the progressive rock and metal community for its novel blend of electronic music (krautrock) or Berlin School electronic and new-age music with progressive metal. Since the band had no bass player, they used synthesizers to cover the low end, an atypical combination in the progressive metal genre. Greyhaven went on to record their self-titled debut album, Greyhaven for Angular Records of Germany in 2000, a sub-division of Musea Records. In 1997, the band added vocalist Brian Francis before completing the recording of their debut self-titled release for Angular / Musea Records

Nate Howard left the group in 1999, and the band relocated from Eugene to Boston, Massachusetts in 2000. Greyhaven added Matthew Cahoon on keyboards and played several live dates, including Baltimore Maryland's Powermad festival in the Summer of 2000 upon the release of the self-titled debut.

The album received press notes and interviews from all over the world in 2000, including Germany's Rock Hard and Heavy Oder Was?, as well as About.com where the band was cited as "taking progressive metal / rock in a new direction".

Greyhaven disbanded in late 2000, with members Matthews and Francis going on to work on solo projects.
