The Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) is the accredited integrated professional organization (AIPO) of geologists in the Philippines by the Professional Regulation Commission. It was founded in 1945 by a group of Filipino geologists.[1]
History[edit]
The GSP was organized on VJ Day, September 2, 1945, amidst the ruins of the newly liberated City of Manila. A group of geologists, mostly Americans, attached to the office of the Chief Engineer, GHQ AFPSC, met with a group of Filipino geologists and mining engineers under the chairmanship of Lt. Col. H. G. Scherick. The late Dr. Jose Feliciano, former head of the Department of Geology and Geography of the University of the Philippines, was unanimously elected as the first President of the Society.
The Society was incorporated in late 1966 to effectively pursue different plans and activities toward the attainment of its objectives. The Philippine government has given due recognition to the Society when, by legislation, it required that one of the members of the Commission on Volcanology must come from the Geological Society of the Philippines.
Mission[edit]
The Society aims to achieve several objectives. Firstly, it seeks to advance the field of geology and related earth sciences by promoting scientific research. Secondly, it endeavors to spread awareness and understanding of the geology of the Philippines and its neighboring regions. Additionally, the Society is committed to upholding a high level of professionalism and ethical conduct within the practice of geology among its members. These objectives reflect the organization's dedication to the advancement and responsible stewardship of geological knowledge and practice.[2]
Vision[edit]
The GSP envisions to advance the science and profession of geology and related fields, including raising public awareness on Earth’s dynamic systems and natural events that impact society. They aim to foster a spirit of scientific research among its members to generate new knowledge and scientific data that contribute to a better understanding of the geology and tectonics of the Philippines, in particular, and geosciences, in general. They also strive to protect and maintain a high professional and ethical standard in the practice of geology amongst its members.
