Feminists in the City (formerly known as Feminists of Paris) is a French company which celebrates women and feminism through art, history, and culture. Based in Paris, it offers guided feminist tours of France, masterclasses, and training programs.
History[edit]
The idea for Feminists in the City came to founders Julie Marangé and Cécile Fara during a course they took on entrepreneurship at Sciences Po Paris.[1] The guided tours began in March 2018 with a "Street art & feminism" tour, aimed at shedding light on gender inequality through feminist street art in the Butte-aux-Cailles neighbourhood in the 13th arrondissement of Paris.[2] Julie Marangé currently serves as the President and Director of Feminists in the City.[1]
Activities[edit]
Feminists in the City hosts 13 guided tours in Paris and several other major French cities like Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseille, and Versailles.[3] The tours are held on weekends and are available in French and English. They explore various themes including street art and feminism, feminism at the Louvre, sexual liberation through the lens of hysterics, the witch-hunt and powerful women of Paris, women at the Musée d'Orsay, feminist history at Père Lachaise Cemetery, and women's rights and equality.
Feminists in the City provides training programmes such as the Powerful Feminist Training and the Powerful Ally Training. They also organise online masterclasses on topics like Drag culture, toxic masculinity, and the male gaze, featuring speakers like Michelle Perrot, historian and professor emeritus.[4][5]
In 2021, Feminists in the City hosted the Summit of Sisterhood, an online event featuring performances, masterclasses, creative workshops, and meet-and-greets. Michelle Perrot mentored the initiative.[6][7]
Since 2019, Feminists in the City has been mentored by Claudine Monteil, a writer, historian, and former French diplomat. A close associate of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, Monteil joined the Women's Liberation Movement at 20 and became the youngest signatory of the Manifesto of the 343, a petition published in Le Nouvel Observateur on April 5, 1971, advocating for the legalisation of abortion in France.[8] She supports Feminists in the City across all its endeavours, as part of an approach of intergenerational sisterhood.
Since 2023, feminist activist and writer Jamia Wilson has been involved with Feminists in the City as a mentor.
