Briega is an independent information medium published in Cantabria (Spain), which is presented both in digital newspaper format and in a monthly paper newsletter. Founded in 2004, its editorial purpose focuses on feeding anti-authoritarian consciousness within social movements in the region.[1][2][3][4][5]

History[edit]

The portal emerged on August 9, 2004 as a result of conversations held between fellow libertarians from western Cantabria who felt the need to create a counter-information project to expand the possibilities of disseminating the struggles that were taking place at that time in the region from a libertarian point of view.[6] The first years had a limited publication frequency that increased until reaching a daily frequency in 2009 after the incorporation of collaborators from Santander.[3][7] In 2010, a cyber attack left the website out of service for two months.[8] Some of the coverage of the first decade addressing topics such as the protests against the implementation of a thermal power plant in Torrelavega, the Palencia-Reinosa-Santander high-speed line project, or the fracking projects that affected the region, as well as the mobilizations against the Bologna process or the 15-M Movement.[9][10][11][12]

On April 4, 2018, the first paper issue of Briega was published, an eight-page monthly publication that is distributed free of charge mainly in Santander.[13][14] In December 2023, the newsletter reached its 50th edition.[15]

Editorial team[edit]

The editorial management of Briega, both in its digital version and in its printed publication, falls on the Briega Editorial Collective. All content generated by the collective is under a Creative Commons license in its Share Alike version (CC-BY-SA).[16] The project is financially supported through fees, donations and specific activities.[17][18][19]
