Battlestar Galactica is an upcoming science fiction television series, based on the 1978 television series of the same name, and will continue in the universe of the 2004 television series developed by Ronald D. Moore.

Production[edit]

As part of their announcement for programs to air on their upcoming streaming service Peacock in September 2019, NBCUniversal revealed a new instalment of the science fiction franchise was ordered straight to series, with Sam Esmail serving as an executive producer. Esmail revealed that it would not be a reboot, and would be a new story set within the established universe.[1] Esmail detailed that he called Moore about the series, and was giving his blessing as long as it didn't serve as a reboot.[2] In May 2020, Michael Lesslie was hired as showrunner of the series, in addition to writing and executive producing the series.[3]

In January 2021, Esmail revealed that the pilot of the series was still being developed, as well as stating the series might see a flexible release schedule that could see multiple episodes released at once or just one at a time.[4] By March, Lesslie exited the series.[5] In January 2022, Simon Kinberg stated that a film version of Battlestar Galactica he was working on would exist in the same universe as this series, and that he was working closely with Esmail on the universe building.[6] In December 2023, Esmail stated he believed the series was close to begin production on a pilot.[7] In January 2024, it was announced Derek Simonds would serve as showrunner for the series.[8]
