The Battle of Tichla took place on July 8, 1987, during the Western Sahara conflict. The Polisario successfully attacked the sand wall.
Battle[edit]
The Polisario breaches the wall on a 40 km front[1] within the first half-hour of the operation, as stated in a release.[2] Some Moroccan soldiers, surrounded by Sahrawi infiltrations and lacking support, surrender.[3] The intervention of the Moroccan aviation proves ineffective.[2]
Aftermath[edit]
The Polisario claims responsibility for the death of 275 Moroccan soldiers and capturing 73 as prisoners.[2] The Moroccans reportedly suffered losses of 250 to 300 in killed, wounded, and captured during the conflict.[1] Beyond military objectives, the attack aims to remind of the Polisario's existence ahead of crucial diplomatic meetings, reassure supporting nations, and motivate Sahrawi refugees in Algeria.[4]
