Development[edit]
On January 24, 2020, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Walt Disney Pictures is developing a photorealistic CGI remake of the 1942 animated film Bambi.[2] Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsey Anderson Beer are set to write the film's screenplay, while Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz, and Andrew Miano are set to produce the remake througth their company, Depth of Field.[2] The remake is reported to be seen by Disney as "a type of companion piece" to the live-action/CGI remake of The Jungle Book and the CGI remake of The Lion King since, like Bambi, those films required extensive photorealistic CGI for their characters and environments.[2] It was also reported that, unlike most theatrical remakes of pre-1970s films, Disney is "not aiming to shoehorn a larger narrative" into the film's plot.[2] Beer said that the film will "honour the intimate brilliance of the original [version]", though it will also "transcend the plot into something more epic and suited to modern audiences".[3] On May 10, 2022, it was reported that Lindsey Beer has finished writing the script for the film.[4]
In June 2023, Sarah Polley entered negotiations to direct the film.[5] In March 2024, Polley exited the project.[6]
