On 21 June 2023, an explosion occurred in a building in the 5th arrondissement, near the Luxembourg Gardens, close to the border of Latin Quarter, Paris. The building at the site of the explosion, was a listed historic monument, built in the 17th-century.[1] It housed a fashion school on the 3rd floor, and was totally demolished. The students were not there at the time, having left to watch a Paris Fashion Week show.[1]
Paris prosecutors are conducting a manslaughter investigation, to determine if it was an accidental gas leak explosion, or whether it was a deliberate violation of safety protocols.[2] Witnesses reported smelling gas before the explosion went off.[3]
The explosion could be felt 500 meters, or 1,640 feet away, with glass being shattered in neighbouring buildings, leading to officials worrying about the structural integrity of the buildings.[4]. Some 270 firefighters were called to contain the fire[4] Three people were killed, six people were critically injured, and more than fifty had minor injuries.[2] Nine students from the United States, from Kent State University were attending the summer fashion class, and all were safe and accounted for.[5]
