"?" (pronounced as "Questions")[1] is a song by British-American rapper MF Doom from his debut studio album Operation: Doomsday (1999). It features Kurious, who also co-wrote the song. The song was produced by Doom, and contains samples of "Vykkii" by The Isaac Hayes Movement and "Catch the Beat" by T-Ski Valley. The introduction is a sample of Joseph Sirola playing the character Dr. Doom from the 1967 TV series Fantastic Four.[2]
Background[edit]
"?" was written by Doom as a tribute to his late brother DJ Subroc, chronicling their shared experiences together.[3][4] Later verses also reflect on various other struggles Doom has faced in his past, such as being "near homeless".[5]
Composition[edit]
The song incorporates samples from "Vykkii" by The Isaac Hayes Movement and "Catch the Beat" by T-Ski Valley. Lyrically, Doom explores his thoughts on life, death, and the afterlife. Throughout the piece, Doom and Kurious question their own existence, and their previous choices that brought them to where there are. Doom ponders, "With different ways to come up and earn clout / I take a look at my life and pace the trails".[1]
