Timeline[edit]

"From the late 15th century, most painters from the region (ex. Frans Hals) fled the religious oppression during the Eighty Years' War and went to the Northern Netherlands, who were experiencing their Golden Age"

The timeline in the above quote is erroneous. It should rather be: "From the late 16th century..."

Reasons for moving[edit]

It is debatable if "most" painters fled (e.g. Rubens stayed in Antwerp)and also it is debatable that this was for reason of "religious oppression". It is in my opinion the fact that among the "Nouveaux Riche" burghers in the North there was an enormous hunger, a collector's mania, for paintings, to demonstrate their newly acquired riches and to underline their social and cultural status. Hence a seller's market for good paintings, luring the painters North.

The so-called "Golden Age" is generally thought to begin around 1600, i.e. the late 16th, early 17th century.

There was religious oppression and people did flee from it, especially the cultural elite where protestantism was more common. You can find this in the lives of many contemporary people.
