Attempt at organization of this category[edit]

I've made numerous changes to the organization of the category recently, all in an attempt to keep the category page as easy to use as possible for readers. I think that should be the guiding principle here. I've made judgment calls throughout, all of which could be challenged, but I've tried to stick to Wikipedia guidelines for organization of categories.

Here's the reasoning:

If the category is more than a page long (which happens when the number of articles gets to 200), then it becomes more difficult for readers to use, and even confusing, since the top "subcategories" section also automatically splits off.

To keep the number of pages down, subcategories have been set up for all but the most major articles. Left on the page are:

  • All cities and towns
  • Neighborhoods
  • Major institutions that are so few they may not need their own category, such as hospitals
  • Major institutions that are well known throughout the county, such as the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium

Any article about a topic specific to Fairfield County should be able to be put into at least two categories that are subcategories of Fairfield County, one municipal, the other topical:

  • Subcategories have been added for cities and towns so that high schools, for instance, go into the category for that municipality. It doesn't seem useful to create a category for a town for which there are five or fewer articles that might go into that category, but that's a judgment call. This organization might be especially helpful to househunters, but also to anyone curious about what articles there are in a particular community or those who are searching for articles on a specific subject they know is attached to that community.
  • Subcategories have been added by topic, such as: transportation in Fairfield County, education in Fairfield County, attractions in Fairfield County. Some of these categories follow patterns elsewhere in Connecticut and beyond. For those interested in a particular topic, municipal categories would be cumbersome.

A Fairfield County information box has been recently created which makes navigation to neighborhoods very easy, so if the Fairfield County category list gets too big again, Neighborhoods would be a good subcategory to create in order to keep the list shorter. Noroton 17:42, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
