Musicians from Stuttgart[edit]

I don't think that making this category a subcategory of Category:Musicians from Stuttgart is appropriate. Are Francisco Araiza, Henk Badings, Percy Goetschius, László Gyimesi and many more defined by their teaching in Stuttgart when they and most of the other HMDK staff have of course taught elsewhere as well? In fact, for quite a few staff in this category their association with Stuttgart was rather marginal. I suggest to revert that edit to this category and resultant edits from members' articles. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 23:38, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think its arguable that most of these people spent a significant part of their lives in Stuttgart and that working there was part of what made them notable. They can be, and mostly are, categorised as from more than one place. I certainly havent removed any from any other place categories. If the concensus is that this is inappropriate I am happy to revert it. But on the whole I think people working in universities and the like should be included as people from the place.       • I have worked at universities in Rhodesia, Nigeria and Malawi. I am not from any of these countries. (I am from Sheffield, I am not English. 4 of our children were born in Malawi and are not Malawian or from Malawi; they are British, not English.) As I have said elsewhere, as these things are difficult to ascertain without access to full CVs and passports, a prudent editor would find something less controversial to do.         • It's a subjective question, where a person is "from". Not necessarily the same as nationality, citizenship or place of birth. People can be "from" several places. The vast majority of our biographical articles are categorised as "from" a place, and often from several. Rarely is there any precise information about nationality or citizenship, but that does not stop them ending up in nationality categories. When Oculi's biography is categorised as from Sheffield that is a subcategory of English people. That is an even more difficult problem in Germany where plenty of places are no longer in Germany though people from them were clearly properly described as German at the time. I agree that studying at or working at an institution does not necessarily make you a person "from" that locality. But it might. In Germany I've found Category:People by educational institution in Germany Would that give us a way of dealing with this issue? I would like a way of linking Category:State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart faculty to People from Stuttgart which deals with your perfectly reasonable objections. We could have Category:People by educational institution in Stuttgart which would include both schools and universities. Some of the people educated at Stuttgart schools were clearly local residents, some weren't, but clearly spent some of their formative years there. Would that be acceptable?
